Getting screwed over for being an uninsured patient

About 2 months ago, I dislocated a finger on my right hand (yes, while picking my nose and sticking it up my arse). I'm uninsured, so I went to the emergency room, was treated, and released.
A couple of weeks later, I got a bill from the Lafayette hospital for about $1,200. No problem. I'd broken my left hand about 2 years ago, went to the same ER and was similarly charged. So, I paid the bill.
Then, about 3 weeks later, I got a bill from a company based in Colorado. The bill was for $4,000, and I was to send payment to an address in Dallas, TX. I called my lawyer, who told me this was bullshite, and he said he'd craft a letter and send it to them.
Then, a few days later, I got another bill from the Lafayette hospital, saying that the $1,200 was just a balance and I still owed them $400. I called the hospital and told them what had happened, and the woman on the line told me "okay, don't worry about it. I'll take care of it." So, one phone call and I don't have to pay the $400.
The other day, I got a letter from the company in Colorado, who had received my lawyer's letter. They thanked me for my concern and said that I was being given a 75% discount, and that I now owe them only $1,000.
Obviously, these people are completely full of shite. Has anyone else ever experienced this? The ER was Lafayette General, btw.

yes, they are full of shite. Many people will just pay them and they get away with it. It's no better from the medical provider side either. They will deny claims until the cows come home.

You can afford a lawyer, but not insurance premiums?

So you don't have insurance but you have a lawyer? Glad you've got your priorities set straight.

Normally you get several bills from an ER visit. One is from the hospital, one may be from radiology services (if you needed an x-ray or other diagnostic test) and one from the physician's group. They are all independent companies. You need to determine who is actually sending you the bill and why.

You are getting what you deserve for being a POS American.

You're doing right to question this billing. A lot of medical billing appears to be contracted out and things get screwed up all the time.
Me - OP surgery, separate bills from surgeon, Anesthesiology, and the surgery center all through outside billing service and I had to pay a bunch up front. Tried to make me pay an extra $1000. Wound up getting about $100 back.

I'm uninsured for 13 more days because I didn't wanna pay 600 bucks for 14 days until the wife's takes over.
Maybe the OP is in a similar situation.

Pretty common scam.
I just got a bill from some collection agency about owing AT&T like $200.
I've been an AT&T customer for 20 years and I am fairly certain they know my address.
Eff these people. The fact that they responded to you and not your lawyer tells you they are FOS.

my son was injured on the job at sams club and while he's just part time, his manager came with us to the ER and filled out everything through workman's comp and the amount of paperwork that flowed during that 3-4 hours was insane.
i mean i'm glad we didn't have to use my insurance for this but its insane how many hoops sams, my son, myself, and the hospital have to jump through to ensure the govt doesnt shut them down for malpractice.
it was explained that even something as simple as failing to change his 'entry' status on a computer screen after he crosses the threshold to the treatment rooms could result in MASSIVE FINES for the hospital.

I'm not getting the communist insurance until they put a gun to my head and make me.

Just wanted to say I have excellent insurance, and will never have to put up with this bullshite.
