I'm not uninsured but I have been sent many fraudulent bills related to medical care. You really do have to pay close attention. I can't imagine how many people just pay without investigating and how much money they make off of it. It's so pervasive and obviously intentional I'm really not even sure how it's legal.

15 years ago we went to a fertility specialist. After numerous procedures and attempts at various things we went the In vitro route. In vitro wasn't covered but everything else was... When we got the bills the stuff prior to Invitro was priced 50% less across the board. I bitched and complained to the doctor admin office and got no sympathy. We paid full price but the procedure worked. Being uninsured sucks and I wouldn't suggest it.

The problem with ERs is often they are several small companies operating together. So at each stop in the ER you may be dealing with a different company, then each bills you separately.

I can afford all of this, as well as the car accident or cancer. I just didn't get charged these fees two years ago when I went to the same ER and thought someone might be able to tell me what specific policies or changes to the system these people were trying to exploit.
Anyway, the people backed down and we'll see what happens next.
