"Past research shows three out of five students are living with a mental health disorder"

I don't doubt this. Definitely hardest period of my life. Living off $600 a month, $20 a day while also having to learn about the diffusivity equation in Reservoir Dynamics, Rankin Cycle in Thermodynamics, Dynamics and Vibration just god awful equations (hardest class), all while getting hammered drunk 2x a week battling a hangover while studying probably the most difficult material I've ever come across while only being able to afford rice and beans is tough as shite. Really taught me humility to a degree.

My life is 100x easier today than then.

There is an excuse for everything today. My dad used to go to work then 3 days a week went to dialysis. On Mondays he felt like shite because it was two days in a row he didn't go and he never once thought about calling in sick.

He worked at Albermarle. One MWF he would leave at 6AM and wouldn't get home until 8-9PM. And these fricks today call in for all kind of bullshite. A bunch of mentally weak fricks.

we never went to clubs during the week.

there were specials every night of the week starting on Wednesday nights for sure.
Different bar/club each night.

$0.50 long necks one night
nickle draft another
pay one price ($20 all you can drink)
etc.

and back then, you could find killer live music just about anywhere any night of the week.

and there wasn't any calling in hungover next day.
carried your still hammered arse to work. sometimes still wearing what you wore the night before. still have the wristband (usually multiple). eyes still glassy. smelling like that homeless drunk that hangs out in front the gas station.

needed a recovery day? that's what Sundays were for.

note: there is no way in hell my old arse could do it today. but mid 90's through early 2000's?
absolutely

There was a time when people like this lost their jobs. Employers hired you expecting you to actually show up for work.

Soft.
I guess covid will be used as a crutch for this generation for a lifetime.

Sad.

Sounds like we work with the same person. Doctors appointment, takes an entire day off. Hair cut, took a half day off. Called in sick one day on a Friday and showed up to work with a lip ring on Monday. Doesn't give a shite about who she is screwing over every time she calls in. There was a 7 day work period where she missed 4 1/2 days (not counting the weekends).

She obviously doesn't care. Guess the higher ups don't either, as long as people are covering her work. Two of us got fed up and started saying no.

First LSU baseball game started at 2. I told my boss the week before that I was going to work damn near 40 hours by Thursday, and I would be here Friday for a little while, but it wouldn't be for long. Told her I shouldn't need to use PTO, but I would if I needed to because I wanted to be gone before lunch. Low and behold, blue hair calls in sick that Friday. They came to me and I told them no, wasn't doing it.

Explanation: Gen Xers grew up in the 80s and 90s. And we had a great time doing it.

Gen Z grew up with phones and in the crazy times. Their minds are fricked up.

I have worked full days with pneumonia. I'm not averse to taking sick leave, but things have to line up. I do everything possible to not dump work onto someone else.

I’d be depressed too if I had to live in that slag-heap known as the UK.

My back was killing me yesterday. Popping 1,000mg of ibuprofen just to keep rolling. The idea of leaving - as a partner, I don’t need anyone’s permission - never even entered my mind. I had work to do, and that is all that mattered. Others were depending on me.

Mental health days and DS excuses. What a crock of shite.

At universities it’s like there’s a competition to see who’s the weakest/most damaged/biggest victim.
It’s wild.

Rather not give the location, but it's just a weekend job.
