One of the strangest parts of her job, a friend maintains, “is the conversations I have with parents who are calling to explain why their child won’t be coming in that day”. However, she is not a schoolteacher, but the head of a cosmetics marketing division, and these repeat absentees are not children, but adults in their 20s.

What do you say to the mother of a 28-year-old who is explaining why her son or daughter is too upset by a recent break-up, too anxious or derailed by any one of a whole smorgasbord of “life stressors” to commit to a 9-5 that day? You can’t question anything involving the words “mental health”. You certainly can’t tell them to “get a grip”. So you sigh, you manage a limp “get well soon”, and you hand their workload over to someone else – someone whose mental health is sturdy enough to allow them to do two people’s jobs. Someone who probably isn’t a Gen Zer?

Your dog dies.

Gen X says, "that sucks" then the next morning gets up at 5-5:15 am and goes to work.

Gen Z says, " oh, I have to mourn poor Fido, I could not possibly make it in tomorrow."

The problem is Gen X created Gen Z

I'm in my mid-30s. One thing I've learned in over the last couple years is that colleagues younger than me are soft as shite.

There is definitely a change in the work culture between the generations. The older group will come to work come hell or high water. The younger ones will call in at the drop of the hat. If they’re going to have a rough day, call in. If they made a mistake and you hold them accountable, call in. A distance relative has a Dr appointment, call in. 2 tough days in a row, quit with no notice.

Ever heard of Xenialls?

We are a mini-generation born between 78-83 that have qualities of both. Though I identify more as an X'er.

ugh yea.....I have been a major proponent of the subset Xennial, on this website for years. But your dates are off. A Xennial is an early Millennial whose childhood resembles that of the GenXers of the 70's and 80's and their later adolescence saw the growth of computers and the internet.. The general consensus of the Xennial range is 1980-1986 as the consensus cutoff is 1979 for Gen X. Granted we are talking age ranges so someone born in 1979 vs 1980, there isnt any difference... except the generation label.

but a Xennial is still a Millennial... not a GenX.

We show up to work. Our parents and grandparents were tough on us to the point where we learned to be productive and independent. Our kids will grow up with the same values and completely over take all the kids right now whose parents wanted to be their friends.

Hard work, value of work, and character are being taught.

I agree with you and not to give millennials or GenZ years any credit, I hate all that’s wrong with them as much as the next guy. However this country has been going to hell for a while now. They’re just now reaching their mid 30s, they haven’t been running the country at all, they have barley been in the workforce a decade. Hard to blame the last 30 years on them.

Ya think??

We live in a world where boys have a dick and think they're a girl. Them and their parents, all need to be in the Mental Ward.

ETA:
I was raised where you don't call in sick unless you're DEAD
Where I work now, you have 3 weeks vacation + 1 week "personal" time. Why not just say "4 weeks vacation"??

I always thought I was a millennial but according to the ages talked about in this article I’d be considered a genZ. Where is the age cutoff for millennial to gen Z?
