Gen Z is more likely to call in sick to work than Gen Xers 20 years their senior thanks to a mental health crisis ‘turbocharged’ by young women

quote:

A troubling rise in the number of young people in the U.K. reporting mental health difficulties like depression and anxiety means they are now more likely to call in sick than aging Gen Xers who are 20 years their senior, in a surprising turnaround for historic wellness trends.

That growing mental health crisis is beginning to have a major impact on Gen Z employees’ career prospects, according to research by the think tank Resolution Foundation (RF).

Gen Z now getting sicker than 40-year-olds
Research from the RF finds that more than a third of young people aged 18 to 24 suffer from what is described as a “common mental disorder,” (CMD) like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. The figure is well above the 24% of young people in 2000 who lived with a CMD.

That jump has been “turbocharged” by a mental health crisis among women. Two out of five women in the U.K. are likely to report a CMD, compared with a quarter of men.

quote:

RF’s research made a striking realization that young women are now 1.6 times more likely than men to take time off work due to ill health. It reversed a trend of young men taking more time off in the 2010s, and the dial has only shifted thanks to a steep rise in female illness in the last couple of years.

Gen Z women are consistently reported as the most likely to be suffering from mental health disorders.

quote:

According to the RF, young Gen Xers surveyed in 2000 had the lowest proportion of CMD cases on record.

And while it might be easy to blame the recent rise on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the issues are more deep-seated and the culmination of longer-running trends.

One of them is an increasingly stressful education environment. The RF says universities have become “hotbeds” for mental health problems. Past research shows three out of five students are living with a mental health disorder

Our hangover call in days were from 91-99 though for sure. Our older bosses weren't much better in that stretch. Wild decade

Not to brag (because I regret never using sick time) but I’ve called in sick exactly one time in my life. Every time I’ve been legitimately sick, I either WFH or was on vacation/between jobs.

There is nothing more annoying than a mouthy bitch.

Especially one that thinks they are doing major shite at work.

Every guy in there wants to say shut the frick up. Just do your work, it doesn’t make you special to complete one task

My sick time is all lumped in with vacation so it benefits someone like me that doesn't get sick often. I can WFH anyway if I still feel up to it.

I think I've called in sick and did not work 2-3 days in 12 years at my current job. I had the flu once and missed 2 days. I felt like absolute arse.

For the older Gen Z’ers who have young kids, it isn’t for mental health days.

Post Covid Daycare and school have been breeding ground for the grossest crud. They are all constantly sick

Ill throw in a brag also. Ive called in sick twice since probably 2000 when I started college. They also happen to be two months at the same time and was legit sick both times. I dont really ever get sick and I would feel weird just telling work oh Im not coming in today so I can go to taco tuesday yay

I work with a 19 year old who is quite creative with her "can't make it" call ins. It's quite humorous. We make a game of it. NO LIE: she actually said she was afraid of an Hamas attack. Had a "don't have clean clothes" call in. She's the worst.

Isn't it amazing the more that women are attaining positions of power in government/media/entertainment/industry/etc, the more dysfunctional society becomes?

I work in recruiting, a lot of people in management are starting to take notice of this trend. Everytime I submit a resume of a woman under 35, I've noticed while there put into the applicant tracking system, a lot of them aren't getting follow ups.

I worked with a young girl a few years ago that took off because she "needed a day to adjust to the time change"

I'd respond with something but I honestly can't think of one

Gem X is by far the most pointless and forgettable generation in American history

And normally that's OK, but when they follow the unrivaled worst generation in the boomers, you see why pur country is where it is

Look at the next sentence- millennial men were soft

Women don't really add anything to the workforce outside of nursing and secretarial work.
