Personal responsibility is a great idealogy to follow on an individual bases. It is a horrible and failed policy strategy on a national/domestic level. That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t have it personally. Maybe one day yall will get it.

You now your neighborhood could go up in flames due to corporate greed too? Look at cancer alley in Laplace, LA. Everyone there has a higher rate of cancer. Bad things just don’t come from poor people.

As if it matters. Louisiana hasn't had a good candidate for governor since Mike Foster, and he was just OK.

Why should a Governor even be involved with this? Can the State not afford $35k?

The Louisiana Governor has way too much authority.

Those were items he didn’t veto. I was just pointing out that there’s a ton of stuff you wouldn’t think the state pays for stuffed in there.

There was also like $400k for Ascension to purchase a “tactical vehicle.”

I’m sure it’s happened before. Governors use the line item veto many times during their term. I’m sure there are same party instances throughout history. Regardless, it’s politics…and it ain’t for the faint hearted or thin skinned. This is the real world, not a civics class.

I hate to defend Landry, but he's kind of right. Not to say that these kinds of things should be pointed out and remembered. I'm sure the R legislators remember every pet project that JBE vetoed. Another factor is that pet project spending (supplemental) has skyrocketed since covid, so JBE wasn't presented with as much pork. These are the two times where it appears JBE used his line item vetoes on pet projects in retaliation.

JBE 2023 pet project vetoes

LA Illuminator: Gov. Edwards vetoes projects for House conservatives who opposed lifting spending cap
quote:

Edwards indicated legislators who opposed efforts to lift the spending cap would be penalized. He and legislative leaders argued those who wanted to restrict spending shouldn’t reap the benefits of the extra cash made available when the cap was lifted.

2021 JBE pet project vetoes
quote:

The governor removed money for Madisonville lighthouse repairs ($250,000), Grant Parish waterworks ($20,000), the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center ($193,000), East Houma airbase park ($230,000) and Houma police security cameras and monitoring equipment ($25,000).

He didn’t offer much justification for these decisions. In a letter Edwards sent to lawmakers, the governor said he removed the Discovery Center funding because it was already receiving financial support in the construction budget. He also mentioned that the money going to a recreation area at the East Houma airbase was being used to build a dog park, but didn’t say whether that is what he found objectionable.

I think more pet projects need to be vetoed. Last session he vetoed many under the justification that the money was going to NGOs that don't "serve an appropriate government function and [not] an efficient and effective use of state resources." and said that for 2025, “Prior to our next legislative session, we plan to work with the Legislature to develop criteria for what type of NGO requests represent the best use of our scarce resources.” Well, that looks like it was an empty promise.

It’s not a political strategy at all; both democrat and even “conservative” governments need dependents and will redistribute what’s needed to maintain power.

Wrong again. One can be poor and not be a fkn scumbag; my paternal grand parents were prime examples. Personal responsibility or lack thereof transcends. I.e., I’ve witnessed and dealt with it personally from upper class honkys.

Landry pissed that Seabaugh went against the bill giving stronger rate veto power to the Insurance Commissioner. Because government price controls always work.

More douchebaggery below.

quote:

Seabaugh said the governor is blaming him out of spite for having voted against a different bill that Landry helped write and shepherd through the Legislature — House Bill 148, a controversial measure that Landry signed into law following an ongoing public feud with another Republican elected official, Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple.

Seabaugh cited the same grudge as the reason why Landry vetoed one of his insurance bills on the last day of the regular session. In an interview that day, the senator said he felt blindsided by the veto because he thought he had the governor’s support. He contrasted Landry with former Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat. “John Bel would call and tell me when he vetoed a bill,” Seabaugh said at the time. “Jeff didn’t.”

We’ve had Democrats as governor, they were worse than Landry. JBE might actually be retarded. Landry still sucks though.

I'm doubting, he has pissed a lot of people off. I won't be voting for him. I just hope someone worth a damn runs to oppose.

99% of politicians in the history of Louisiana have fricking sucked because the populace is stupid and does not hold them accountable. We take more pride in partying hard and being known as drunkards than we do in having a decent place to live. The biggest point of pride in our state is that we can get a daiquiri in a drive thru and get blackout drunk at LSU football tailgates then leave the game at

People from Louisiana are DUMB, let's quit blaming politicians. Yall are the ones that put these clowns in office. Quit complaining about how awful the state is if you're going to vote for someone because your family knows them or you they have the same accent as you.

I tried living in that shitehole postgraduate, glad I got out once my kids finished elementary school.

Completely agree. Landry isn’t doing it simply to be a fiscal hawk. He was never going to be one.

But like I stated earlier in this thread, I’m also not going to feel bad about a legislator who is finding his pet park or ballfield project getting slashed.

I wonder if any state road repairs/maintenance type projects are getting the veto pen because a legislator didn’t go his way. Something that’s a real state government responsibility. That could be telling. Allowing a legislator who voted with him to keep his ballfield funding in tact, but slashing a state highway project in the district of a legislator who went against him.

Wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for a Louisiana governor to do that, but would just show that Gov Landry is just all the same as the previous Governor.

Ehh…my personal financial situation got better under Biden, but it wasn’t because of anything Biden did. My career after years of work just suddenly progressed at a high rate from 2021-2024 than it did 2016-2020. Trump doesn’t deserve any blame nor Biden any credit for that, though.
