This is the million dollar question. You can continue to expand the "secure zone" indefinitely, really.
First it was the cockpit, then the plan, then the terminal, then the building, etc. etc.

Eh, that guy was a pro though. He knew how to find the holes. Most people that do this get very nervous. If you've ever been to Europe or abroad the amount of security and security with automatic weapons is multiple times what the USA is. Part of that is to make people nervous and drive them away before they do anything.

Once you get outside of the secured areas an airport really is no different than a shopping mall or any other area.

I doubt it. That doesn't make any sense, what if something happens in the parking garage or the street outside the airport? Where does security start? No way they are going to make everyone picking up friends and family go through security.
Obvious answer is to ban all guns. For the children.

if anything, they will just secure the entire airport from now on
Outside of the secured areas (gates, etc), an airport isn't really different than a busy public building. It would be like putting security checkpoints at a mall or busy office building.

MSNBC reporting the gun as an "Semi-Automatic Assault Pistol" was used.

So we're going to move to every "soft area" needing metal detectors and security including OUTSIDE of the "venue"?
Ugh.
Ugh.

Media is useless and almost counter-productive. Guy from CNN or somewhere just said it's "chaos" there. In the background, not a soul can be seen running or acting scared or anything. Just a guy directing traffic. These media people are idiots.

If that is the shooters Facebook that has been linked in this thread then he has a pretty good looking sister. Other than her little snaggle tooth she has a great body. I am no looking at her facebook....

I thought "long gun" was said?
If not I bet you can chalk up another for Team Glock.

ABC reporting he flew on Air Canada from Anchorage to Minneapolis and then Ft Lauderdale with the checked gun.

Horrible. The state of Alabama doesn't do much right, but allowing concealed carry in unsecured areas within its airports is one of them.

I'll be interested in the Ft Lauderdale connection
why there?

I'm pretty sure if you were there you'd describe the situation - even the current situation - is chaotic. Standing on the fricking tarmac is not a calm situation.
As I typed this there are people running around on the tarmac as well.

Did you know that gun powder is 75x worse for the atmosphere than any greenhouse gas known to man?
Ban the guns. For the climate. For the animals. For humanity.

Maybe you are both right.
The term white Hispanic has been around forever as a box to check on a form.
The term white Hispanic was not used by the media to describe people until Zimmerman shot Trayvon.

Yep. "reported" pic of the gun on ground with evidence marker. Team Glock! Damn!!
Not the crazy long magazine though. Just the extension magazine for the pinky.

That is fine, but what would it have changed in this case?
Unless you're carrying off the street, you would need to get your gun out of your bag, load it, and conceal carry it before you even left the airport. Neither are practical ways to deter this shooter.

Meh, this is easy to pull off. No pro necessary.
At any rate, he should be burned at the stake.
