JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A former University of Mississippi student who admitted helping place a noose on a statue of a civil rights activist is going to prison.
A federal judge sentenced Graeme Phillip Harris on Thursday to six months in prison beginning Jan. 4, and 12 months' supervised release. Harris' lawyer argued he didn't deserve jail time.
Harris pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor charge of using a threat of force to intimidate African-American students and employees. Prosecutors say he and two other former students placed a noose on the statue of James Meredith, a black man who integrated Ole Miss amid rioting in 1962.

It really does. He's a dick, but jail?

Uh, that was definitely a shitty thing to do, but I don't think that putting him in prison does the public, or him, any favors.
Maybe some community service in Jackson working with little black kids would have been more appropriate.

did he have priors? seems a bit excessive for a prank that didn't hurt anyone or any property

I don't agree with what he did, but that sentence is fricking bullshite

I would have assumed he didn't have good representation considering the insanity of this sentence.

Pleated guilty. And yeah, jail...wtf?

quote:True. A tweet mentioning Meredith and a noose would have sufficed. He didn't have to go so far as to put an actual noose on the statue.
that seems a little much

Pretty sure that Ole Miss itself pushed for a very stiff sentence and the judge complied.
Ole Miss trying to be as "tough looking" on shite like this as possible so they don't lose two nicknames "Ole Miss" and "Rebels" that are literally worth tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars each.
IMO it's kind of how Goodell was insanely hard on the Saints over the bullshite "Bountygate" in order to present a good look to the world regarding head trauma.

Punishment seems excessive, but don't know if he's had any priors. Community service would seem like a fair punishment.
