In addition to prison time, Harris was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and 12 months supervised probation.
He must also undergo mental health and substance abuse treatment.
He will begin serving his sentence on January 4 with the Federal Bureau of Prison.
I would think this would be a low security 'country club.' Still shouldn't be there, but it's not like it'll be Angola.

Look, I think 6 months is harsh too, but let's not pretend it's undeserved when he could have gotten felony charges and a longer sentence with a jury and original charges.
If you really believe this guy was just a drunken idiot kid, then you might possibly be delusional. A drunken idiot kid is someone that gets plastered and posts made up stories online about his conquests with cab drivers. Do you consider yourself to be capable of putting a noose on that statue? Maybe that's why you defend him.
The sentence is one issue, but his actions were undeniably racist and horrible. Have you forgotten that in the south black people used to be lynched and hung for a myriad of reasons?
If you are tired of hearing about racism, do something positive to help improve the future. Otherwise please don't post your self absorbed ignorance about the topic. Stick to making up stories about women you didn't sleep with.

So great job judge; you've turned an drunken idiot kid into someone who is either going to get his teeth kicked in by the people he was bigoted against constantly, or join a group that will turn him into an even bigger racist bigot.

If I'm making up conquest stories, I'm probably going to shoot a bit higher than cab drivers.

That kid was not in any good fraternity at ole miss fwiw. He's a loser and a redneck dumbass.
That sentence is ridiculous though, especially considering James Meredith forgave him publicly and said it was an immature kid making a mistake. They talked to each other about it. James is an incredibly down to earth guy and very approachable.

No, that was directed towards OML. Not you at all. Sorry for the confusion.

Who in here have you seen defending that type of shite? Go ahead and point out hypocrisy, but don't make up a strawman argument to defend this guy. Both he and anyone that does what you mentioned are knowingly doing something wrong.

Well the act was stupid and the sentence is more so.

He garbed a statue. I don't care if it's the law (which I can't think of one it violates on the top of my head), it's ridiculous he's being charged for something. He should have simply been kicked out of school, and if this is somehow criminal, then made to do community service. His incarceration for 6 months will cost the taxpayers at least 20K, and that is just insane.
How about you let him serve in the community he previously thought poorly of and give him a new perspective? Putting him in an environment where he's almost certainly to get his arse kicked by the people he condemned previously isn't going to put him on the path to righteousness. More likely make him even more pissed off at minorities. All this serves is to take taxpayers' money and ruin this stupid kid's life permanently. It's just ridiculously stupid and sad.

First off, go frick yourself, dick.
Secondly, tell me the law he broke? He was an idiot I didn't want representing my university, to where they had every right to expel him for it, but I can't think of anything he did to deserve a 6 month sentence.
And finally, kiss my arse, you pussy.

Wow, sorry if I upset you.
Did you miss the part where I said his sentence is harsh in my opinion? I don't think he deserves 6 months in prison, but I also am not deluded enough to think he has zero chance of being convicted of a felony hate crime if he went to a trial by jury. You're trying to paint him the victim because he's going to jail and might get beat up and forced to join a white gang for a silly innocent prank. All I'm asking is for you to consider that what he did is hateful and wrong. Not whether he deserved jail time.
Maybe you're too emotional invested to be rational now because I made fun of your Uber story. I'm sorry. I do think it's a waste of time and money. I also think the media plays shite like this up to an exponential level so that people will always feel overwhelmed with racial tension to the point of not seeing eachother as humans but as some sort of enemy.

The guy is a tool and should have been kicked out of Ole Miss for what he did. Did you miss my previous posts where I said this?

Well, you're a newb who personally attacked me over one of the more wasted moments of my life (certainly on this site). I think telling you to frick off isn't completely uncalled for on that issue.

that seems a little much
While it shows horrific judgment and incredibly poor taste, this offense is, essentially, trespassing/vandalism in nature. Expulsion from the University, community service and a good public shaming seems more the order of the day that PMITA prison.

Not that I agree with what he did but prison time for a noose on a statue? Pretty ridiculous.

Vandalism that costs zero to fix. Even if he spray painted it that isn't supposed to be prison time.
