Tragic situation, though, RIP to those who fell with the bridge.

Incredible stroke of luck this happened at 1:30am instead of 1:30pm. Instead of 70 people it could easily be 700 people.

It looks like they lost power, restored for a second (or maybe just emergency lighting) and then it goes back down just before impact. I think I could see smoke coming from the stack still though.

It is so sad for the workers just out there trying to put food on the table.

I cannot fathom the amount of work that will be involved to clean that up

That is absolutely insane that anyone could survive that! Between the fall, debris raining down, and water temperature that's outrageous.

Path the ship took. Could be any number of things that went wrong. Terrible

Looking at the full Twitter video at a faster speed. The swerve is obvious .

Just before the swerve the ship seems to lose all deck lighting. The swerve begins they lose light again then hit the bridge pier. Could be loss of power which led to rudder failure.

Good lord! It just WENT. There was no slow descent to doom, only a quick, cold plunge into eternity.

God rest their souls.

So they just said 3 of the vehicles were workers pouring concrete. Which is why I think some vehicles weren't moving.

I know it was in the middle of the night but the fact that construction work was being done on the bridge at the time could be a small blessing. If not for the maintenance work their likely could have been even more traffic on the bridge.

Doesn't seam like that ship would have been able to fit under it.

The ship has to know at what draft, how much of the ship is above water. Most ships that come in the Mississippi River, pull about 32ft of draft. 32ft of the ship is under water.

The controlling maximum freshwater draft for the Mississippi River Ship Channel from the jetty end of Southwest Pass to the upriver limit of the Port of New Orleans is now set at 50 feet for the first time ever.

From the Southwest Pass, it’s 230 miles up the Mississippi River to Baton Rouge.

A ship loaded with Jet-A once lost power while leaving a dock. Lucky that the tugs jammed it against the dock, an a few lines were dropped, helping to slow it down.

Jet-A powers modern commercial airliners and is a mix of extremely refined kerosene.

Just take US 50/301 through Annapolis over the Bay Bridge instead.

I may do that. Never been that way, but looks like an easy cut over to 13 north. If you mean the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, that's out of the way for me, I'll hit 301 north of Richmond.

There's the Chesapeake Bay Bridge through Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel through Norfolk. I'm talking about the Bay Bridge that carries US 50/301 through Annapolis. It's barely even a detour when driving from NC to NJ. Depending on traffic on a normal day it's probably already faster than driving through Baltimore.

Take I-95 to I-495 in DC and around the SE side of DC to US 50.

support pier protectors

These should’ve been standard at every bridge without land-based piers (including Key), might have prevented this.

The only saving grace in this incident. Still terrible, but if this happened during rush hour it’s significantly worse.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel through Norfolk.

Just got back from Newport News / Norfolk. The amount of traffic in that tunnel with construction is already terrible. Can’t imagine this will help.

They should have been mandated after the Sunshine Skyway Collapse but we're not a society prone to doing anything that's smart. "Waste of time and money" I'm sure. They could have done that instead of spending billions of dollars and a decade on a replacement bridge.

I never understood this line of reasoning.
The luck would have been for the ship to have never hit the bridge.

Can you imagine what was happening on the bridge of that ship?

Got it. Looks like I'll hit 301 to Annapolis and avoid DC and Baltimore altogether.
