Thought the same thing. Thank God this didn't happen during rush hour.

This is a nightmare. 20 people in the water is the first priority. Then the ripple effects of traffic, and the port of Baltimore completely shut down.

Absolutely terrifying how quickly that went down. That water is probably under 50 degrees right now too. Those poor workers and the regular joes just driving home/to work.

I’ve always felt uneasy when driving over a bridge as a container ship passes underneath - this obviously just makes it worse.

The narrow arse Baltimore Harbor Tunnel is about to be a bumper-to-bumper nightmare for a while.

This is what happened to the skyway bridge in Tampa Bay in the 80's.

That's horrible.

Doesn't seam like that ship would have been able to fit under it.

Prayers for all involved.

Do you remember the train wreck in Alabama in Big Bayou Canot ? A tug and barge hit the rail span minutes before an Amtrak train went over.

Good thing it wasn’t rush hour in Baltimore. And I hope it wasn’t intentional.

Sure glad Horsemeat wasn’t on it. He’s been through enough.

As if living in Baltimore wasn’t bad enough, now you’re 45 minute commute just became a 2 hour daily commute for probably at least a year. Might as well move.

yes. There were many changes to the USCG towboat license program after that. Also many changes to mariner medical programs after the bay bridge in San Fran was hit in early 2000’s.

Jesus. I'm not doing the whole "it could have been me" thing - but I just picked up a load of Mccormick Spices from Sparrows Point, had to use that bridge to get there and leave.

Timing is everything. Glad you're ok.

For frame of reference, the Francis Scott Key Bridge had a clearance of 185 feet. The Horace Wilkinson Bridge that carries stopped traffic on I-10 over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge has a clearance of 175 feet.

This is similar to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay being struck by a tanker and collapsing in 1980. That was due to bad weather though. The support piers were very exposed to offline ship just like they are with the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Old Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Francis Scott Key Bridge

Replacement Sunshine Skyway Bridge with a much wider ship channel opening and support pier protectors. They'll probably model a replacement off of this.

I'm driving back to New Jersey from North Carolina tomorrow. Looks like a detour west at DC for me. Tragic situation, though, RIP to those who fell with the bridge.

Just take US 50/301 through Annapolis over the Bay Bridge instead.

Path the ship took. Could be any number of things that went wrong. Terrible
