There was criticism of most of the renovation because it didn't adhere to the gothic style. The fact is, most of the statues, stained glass and the spire we are discussing today are more in the "Romantic" architectural style which was the style of the time when the renovation of the 1800s took place. So there is historical precedent for using the architectural style of the time to design the new spire.

Thats kinda dumb. There are probably more people than ever with the abilities to do that work. The worlds population is many times more now than it was then giving us more talented people. Add into that that now we have modern devices, it shouldn't be a problem of recreating. The question is, is there enough money to hire these skilled people for many many years?

You could think that.
But the style of our time is cold, brutal, and purposefully antagonistic. It’s a clean break with everything that came before, and purposefully so.
So that actually doesn’t make any sense.
It is good that they broke with gothic design in that renovation. Gothic cathedrals were often intended to terrify the lay people. Notre Dame is memorable because its not that.
it’s designed to be beautiful and uplifting, which is what good architecture is about.
Even if we’ve managed to forget that.

France gave us the Statue of Liberty, maybe we should give them a new spire? Make it the biggest and best spire in all of Europe, gold plated, with the inscription “Rendre la France grande à nouveau.”

A reasonable compromise would be to replicate the original as closely as possible and require at least two priests to have “COEXIST” bumper stickers on their Macs.

They had also recently completed 3D laser imaging the entire structure. The building was literally crumbling apart. Many of the buttresses had been "repaired" with wood and painted to match the masonry that had fried away. If the French Government was honest, they would tell you that this fire was a blessing in disguise. There was no way they could properly repair it intact, only damage control.
