Its almost impossible to find a Mason who can still do a full brick chimney correctly. Good luck finding someone who can recreate that level of detail and ornateness.

They are probably realizing that there is no one in the world that has the craftsmanship to rebuild it like it was.

Oh, there are those with the craftsmanship, but it's going to cost someone dearly to have them restore it to its original design.

Just ask anyone involved in an historic renovation about the hidden costs and hoops that have to be jumped through to get even the simplest things done.

Does France own the cathedral or does the Catholic church?

France owns the cathedral, but the Catholic church has the exclusive right to use it for religious purposes in perpetuity. The Catholic church pays for the day to day costs of operating the cathedral and keeping it open free to the public.

The Mexican labor is going to destroy France. They'll finish under budget and time, but Lord, will they leave?

They had also recently completed 3D laser imaging the entire structure. The building was literally crumbling apart. Many of the buttresses had been "repaired" with wood and painted to match the masonry that had fried away. If the French Government was honest, they would tell you that this fire was a blessing in disguise. There was no way they could properly repair it intact, only damage control.

Yeah this didn't happen with the twin towers, either.

The spire wasn't original to the cathederal. The one that collapsed was built in the 19th century.

It is interesting that changing iconic buildings was normally through much of history but is viewed as tasteless now.

I tend to be in the recreate camp especially if it is not totally destroyed. There is plenty of historical precedents to go a different route though.

Hey, here's an excellent, relevant comment by LSU Alumnus from the thread during the fire:

Which makes me wonder which is worse, losing it, or being left with ruins that no one can decide how to handle?
