France owns the cathedral, but the Catholic church has the exclusive right to use it for religious purposes in perpetuity. The Catholic church pays for the day to day costs of operating the cathedral and keeping it open free to the public.
So would not one assume that the Catholic church is the sole decider in how it's rebuilt?

A prime example of modernizing where classic seems best is the repainting of the frescoe at the ceiling of the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris. I’ll let you decide which is best and which direction should be opted for regarding Notre Dame.
The original frescoe by Jules-Eugène Lenepveu entitled The Muses and the Hours of the Day and Night:
The current frescoe by Chagall, et al. entitled...(I’m not sure what it’s called, and honestly don’t really care):

I think it would be great if the pope came out and said ‘we aren’t taking donations, or suggestions...but we’d love the help of the French government to expedite our plans.’
That'd be great and all but the Church doesn't own the cathedral.

France is going to screw this up and we will have to go in and save it.

By the time it is finally rebuilt, with their changing demographics, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a straight up mosque.

I was pissed reading your post but realized they were at least smart enough to have this overlaid over the original so it sounds like they can go back to it possibly.

They do have all of the money though...I’m sure they could work out something.

Apologies, I could’ve worded it better, but posting from a phone can be trying enough.

If they’re not going to rebuild it in the fashion of the original, then don’t bother. This is a cultural landmark and tourist attraction. It is a splendid, awe inspiring example of medieval gothic architecture. If it’s modernized then it’s pointless.

Honestly, I’m sure they’d seen Chagall’s etchings and such. It’s not like he’d misrepresented the artist he was. It’s a terrible choice all around, it doesn’t match the changes in the least...or pay homage of any sort.

But Prime Minister Édouard Philippe upended expectations with an announcement of an international competition to replace the iconic spire that collapsed into Monday’s inferno. He also raised the prospect of a 21st-century twist atop a 12th-century creation.
He was immediately told to shut the frick up, and being French, surrendered immediately.
