Your great-uncle is her great-grandfather. Phrasing it as "my great uncle, my grandfather's brother, was married to her great grandmother," overly complicates things. Your mother/father is cousin to one of her grandmothers/grandfathers.

Genetically you're fine, but the real question is how close is your immediate family with your extended family.

I'm pretty sure he lives in Zachary, which I believe has a population of around 10k.

OP, did have you and your new girl compare family reunion t-shirts? Y'all probably have a few matching ones

Obviously not that close if he's never met the girl before now.

grew up seeing my second cousins a lot. This is gross.

I've never met mine don't know their names.

It's all perception. I've known guys and girls who grew up together as close friends who wouldn't date because they saw it as gross even though they weren't related.

Some would see 2nd cousins as gross if you know them. If you never knew them it's really not a big deal. Once you get past 1st cousins statistically the chance of deformed children isn't any higher than non related couples.

not that i would continue down the OP's path, but there's no blood relationship there. i (personally) wouldn't continue the relationship, but if you're both committed and OK knowing the above, i see no problems.

ETA: by no blood relation i mean they don't come off of the same branch of the tree.

They have the same great grandparents. How far back do you consider the branches of the tree go to not consider it "blood relation"?

ETA: Technically his great grandparents are her great great grandparents, but the concept remains. They share that branch from that couple.

Eh, things may get interesting when she's talking about her crazy Aunt Iris, and he realizes that she's talking about his grandmother.

How he stated it is a little ambiguous though because it does leave it open to be through marriage.

There is technically nothing wrong with dating/marrying second cousin once removed. I know some on my paternal granmother's side, but I don't even know the others.

they are branches that joined together 2 generations upward, not a branch that went off and came back together.

i dunno. just my take. i wouldn't move forward, but that's a weird enough situation where i wouldn't judge.

I can't wait for the "my kid is being bullied in school for being my second cousin" thread in 15 years.
