A 29-acre tract of land in Mandeville that the Al Copeland family donated to the LSU Health Foundation will be the site of a $150 million mixed used development aimed at retirees, according to a news release from the foundation Thursday.

The LSU Health Foundation called the project one of the largest for the north shore in decades and said it will bring training opportunities and jobs as well as revenue for cancer research.

The land, which is adjacent to Mariners Village, has long been the subject of speculation about what might be built there. Valued at more than $7 million, the news release said that the donation is the largest the LSU Health foundation has received in its 31 years.

More than $20 million from land lease revenue will be dedicated to cancer research funding over next 40 years, according to the news release.

The plan for the property is to create a multi-use restricted living and retirement community, the news release said.

Restaurants, a marina, a hotel and apartments for active adults are part of the plan, Matt Altier, president and CEO of LSU Health Foundation said in a prepared statement. The development will also include health care services provided by LSU Health Sciences Center and its students.

So they'll let them do this, but told the others trying to develop the old concrete place no?

Its like the same damn thing.

Because we need more terrible drivers on the Northshore.

It seems confusing. A retirement community but with Restaurants, a marina, a hotel, also include health care services provided by LSU Health Sciences Center and its students.
Weird.

You think they will have a bunch of the old folks get STDs like the ones in Florida?

A retirement community on land that goes completely under water several times a year. What could go wrong?

Fire the architects who came up with this PR photo because it looks worse than some of the MS Paint memes on this board.

it will be an interesting battle considering the local war that erupted in the early 90's when Copeland was shot down trying to build his family compound there because it was "too disruptive."
I guess disruptive has a different threshold these days...

Looks like a developer that thinks Disney World was built on the Northshore.

That’s kind of a slap in the face to the Copelands.
They were getting into the retirement home business, and you use their donation to compete against them?

Wasnt the big "too disruptive" beef with Al about him taking off and landing his helicopter on the property?

Among other things if I recall. The height variance and power boats racing along the lakefront was heavily discussed as well.
I guess I was looking at it more from a traffic/density point of view.

I grew up about 3/4 of a mile from his house in Metairie. It was amazing how loud those powerboat races were. Of course, it was only once a year.

I dont remember what the whole fight was about in Mandeville, but I do remember a helicopter being involved.

How is this any fricking different than the Port Marigny thing? Oh, I get it there's a health unit. That changes everything....bunch of sedate old people in the sack for 7-8 pm.

Personally don't care but Mandeville kept fricking the guys who owned that property. They kept moving the goal posts . The owners would meet the stips and the St.Tammany or Mandeville would come up with another bullshite demand.

What about that site on the lakefront just west of 90 in Slidell? I saw someone has a permit there.
