Eliminate all federal student loans for non-STEM degrees. Take the money funding all the worthless HR/gender studies/CRT/etc majors and put them towards trade schools.

Anyone else doing it?

He can’t fill these:

quote:

5000 openings for mechanics

Because this is an absolute lie:

quote:

offering a salary of $120,000 a year

If he were offering that along with 100 plus hours of PTO, 40 of Sick Leave, quality health insurance, and reasonable other benefits, they would have pert near every mechanic within a 2 hour radius of their dealerships putting in applications.

But he’s not offering that and he knows it and their training/apprenticeship is nonexistent.

Americans by and large are lazy and want a comfortable life without having to earn it.

And many in our government have fed into that belief.

So this isn’t surprising

You are saying the reason these jobs are going unfilled is because we don't have the workers available.

No. I'm not saying that.

We have the workers. They just refuse to work because they expect overpaid, unskilled factory jobs like their grandpappy had in the 50s.

Been telling y'all.

The issue isnt workers, its people who will work.

MFG "returning" is a dumbass pipe dream.

Don’t blame the kids. They’ve been told they need a college degree by everyone forever.
The entire educational system is setup to keep students in said system for as long as possible.

When I was in high school, your senior year you were in the counseling office all the time with them in your ear telling you that you need to pick your 4 year degree, that that you need not think about vocational school, etc.

It is a lie. There has been a lot of lying by CEOs about the pay of blue collar work and demand over the last few years. A few months ago there was post here about a Pennsylvania company paying welders fresh out of school like 75k plus benefits. Within a few posts Augustdog or whatever did the legwork and showed that no one in that area are starting out new welders anywhere near that amount. Complete bullshite

I can’t believe a CEO would lie and blame others instead of themselves for cutting staff and offshoring jobs. It is always someone else’s fault.

Feels like a lie. My BIL is a Ford mechanic at a dealer and doesn’t touch that
Local Ford dealer shop rate is $150/hr 6-months ago. What’s the mechanics cut? $35-40/hr?

These companies do a terrible job recruiting young people. They could easily help fund "shop" classes for teen-agers in various markets. Would have a small army of mechanics within a few years.

Nope. As soon as you train them, they'll jump to another job.

I suspect most people in this thread are not hiring mgrs. Its much much harder to find even average help today than it was 10 years ago.

Our outfit overpaid and still had recruitments that went unfilled.

Maybe Ford can start a trade school and get certified by the US dept of education. Start a program where you train high schoolers/ recent grads to be mechanics/ other trades and retain them as mechanics when they graduate. “Ford School of Mechanics

In my minds eye I can absolutely see this as having happened in the 50’s or 60’s and people being proud to have been “selected to study at the ford school of mechanics.” It’s unfortunate how far we’ve come from our grandparents generation.

In the 50s few people went to college. The pool of quality applicants for mechanic work would be high.

Today, no one wants to work. More people choose white collar jobs, even if blue pays more.

The pool of applicants is very poor.

Trump’s Secretary of Labor, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, needs to tackle these issues more publicly and aggressively.

I’m not well versed in the actions of the Department of Labor, and her official mission statement sounds okay, but it lacks any specificity.

I was afraid that this young hispanic woman, a Republican from Oregon and a daughter of a Teamster, was a political appointee with no real skills.

She only swore-in in May 2025, so I guess it’s too early to call, but the clock is ticking Ms. Chavez-DeRemer. The labor development side of our manufacturing and technical/industrial economy is counting on you!

Is ford investing money into vocational technical programs in high school or are they investing in EV’s that no one wants?

Ive got two 17 year olds in the house, they kick arse. Both are academic rock stars, work and still have time for classes, friends, work and extra curriculars.

Any youth that hsa initiative will be highly successful today, the competition is poor.

That’s what I was wondering. I have a friend that’s a mechanic for a European brand and from what he said it makes it sound like they don’t make as much money some of the other trades, to be honest. But he’s never actually told me his salary.

This highly paid “mechanic” probably has 10 years of experience with a vast parts sourcing database, intimate knowledge of thousands of parts, manages a team of contractors, can use an oscilloscope to troubleshoot CANBUS and other comms protocol problems, can solve manufacturing problems on the back end of the process without completely deconstructing and reconstructing a vehicle.

If Ford is paying them $120,000, they’re probably worth 2x that much.
