Turned on a documentary about American horses on PBS and this was one of the early statements. I backed it up twice to make sure that is what was said. So I guess horses on the American continent were not introduced by Spaniards?

I know, Dear Facebook……

Horses first evolved in North America, went extinct, reintroduced by the Spanish.

When the Spaniards entered Mexico and fought their 1st battle against the Indians, they were about to be overwhelmed when the Indians suddenly withdrew. They were terrified -- not by the Spaniards' guns, but by their "fire-breathing monsters".

Not to derail the thread, but two decades ago I read botany of desire by Michael pollen.
He wrote about the co-evolution (which I didn’t know was a thing) about four plants:
The tulip
Marijuana
Potato
Apple

Very interesting take. Which evolved first: humans or plants?

The Spanish originated in South and Central America and migrated to Europe, only to unknowingly return to conquer their ancestral home.
