When microwave ovens first came out we were the first people on the block who had one and my Dad told me it was” fell off the back of a truck” which I took literally and then repeated to everybody.

There was a guy a couple years ago in Shreveport selling blue crabs on the side of the street on East 70th and Fairfield Ave intersection, ghetto area. I stopped by and asked where he bought them, and he said he didn't buy them, but caught them that morning in Pecan Island. I think he was selling either $10 a blue crab or $40 a dozen. Can't remember.

I just feel that wouldn't work. The gas money to drive to and from Pecan Island - Shreveport, and the effort/time to catch the crab. And sell in the ghetto on a fairly busy street, E 70th.

He at least in my opinion chose the most blue crab populated part of South Louisiana, which I think is Pecan Island. Throw a check on a string out in front of any marsh drainage pipe and within 10 seconds you have a crab every time.

The "shrimp distribution" gig was popular in the 80's before imported frozen shrimp dominated the market. Guys would go together, rent a truck load it iced at some Gulf coast shrimp dock then drive inland 12 to 24 hrs to some city. Park it and sell still cold shrimp at a good price. Minor problem was having some local grocery sic the cops on them for lack of required licenses. Cops like shrimp too. Back then the price at the dock was far below retail inland.

Steaks sold from a car was probably stolen. In the early 70's Army I knew a Ft Bragg cook who faked a high mess hall headcount, stole the surplus good stuff, then sold it in his hometown about 50 miles away. When caught by CID all that happened was a reduction in rank/pay.

I remember 2 dudes showing up at our house in a pickup with a fricking deep freezer in the bed. My dad pulled a gun on them before they even exited the truck... never did get to hear the sales pitch

Remember the $1500 home stereo speakers that the dude "accidentally" received an extra pair of and he was willing to sell them to you for $200 right here in the Lowe's parking lot?

The White Van Scam was still going around in 2008. My wife and I just got back from our honeymoon and I was putting gas in Baton Rouge and was approached by these dudes.

I was working in my shop in New Mexico about 8 years ago when a very nice Ford F250 pulled in with 2 young men in it. Had a South Carolina Gamecock plate on front and the driver was wearing a USC shirt and hat. He started in telling me about how they were finishing up a paving project around the corner and had about 3 yards of hot patch asphalt they could bring over and spread on my driveway for a good price. I asked them if they were from South Carolina and the driver said yes. I asked them if they were from Murphy Village and they backed out of the driveway so fast it was pretty damned impressive.....never saw them again in New Mexico. I am certain they tell that story to their "family" members to this day.....

I had to look that up. Interesting. So they’re like Irish gypsies or pikies?

Yes. I bought them one time and they were horrible steaks. They would drive into our neighborhoods why we were out playing and try and sell to us as kids. Then you had the guys with the cheap speakers too.
Ironically i bought a set of tower speakers and i still have them to this day. Just don't use the stereo anymore.

You to be verbally accosting regularly in public parking lots by men selling steaks out of their car trunks. “ It’s Omaha steak, man, you look like a good dude, I’ll sell you 10 prime filets for 28 bucks man. “ WTF was that all about? Anybody else remember that ?

I remember them, my friends wife brought like $300 worth of ribeyes from them. Never seen a ribeye look that pathetic.

One thing I saw about 15 years ago, while leaving a Mexican Restaurant, in the parking lot. Our group was approached by a older black guy.

He came up to us and didn’t say a thing and gave us this serious look and then in a flash opened up the side of his jacket. He had what looked like 50 necklaces hanging there like it was on display at a store. “$20 or two for $35”

I only seen that situation in movies or cartoons.

I think the steak guy was ok but its wasn't prime or anything.

The speaker was a scam, They typically had a very nice cabinet but the woofers, tweeters, etc where garbage and would blow out at 25-50w watts. They would even show you an ad in a magazine that showed them as being expensive etc.

Yes. Interesting group. Used to be notorious for running all sorts of cons and committing all manner of fraud and the like but they seem to be less inclined to that sort of business today. There are still bands of them doing that sort of thing though. Those 2 young men were part of one of those bands.

Giant home speakers as well.

"White van speakers". The people selling them were "installers" and the warehouse put too many on their truck. They would show you the invoices that had prices about 100 times what they were worth. That scam was ubiquitous even in Europe. They should bring it back because they could sell a shitload of them to Youtubers in the audio space so they could make "we tested the white van speakers and you won't believe what we found" videos.

When I was a young man, around 15 or so, I would load the bed of my 1969 C10 truck with coolers and drive from the west side of Atlanta to Thunderbolt Georgia on a Thursday night / early Friday morning. About 4 hours. I would buy shrimp for about .50 a pound, heads on. They would give me the ice. I would have about 200 pounds or so of shrimp. I would drive back to Atlanta and set up on the side of Bankhead Highway and Fulton Industrial Blvd around 10 AM Friday morning. By 2 PM I would be sold out. I would sale that shrimp for $2.50 a pound so I would gross about $500. It cost me about $60 in gas and the shrimp cost me about $100. I'd make $340 for about 12-14 hours of effort or about $24 an hour cash. I was 15-17 years old....it was a PILE of cash! I did this every other week during summer break and would do it on Friday nights and Saturdays some in the fall. It was a helluva gig for a kid. I usually had a friend or 2 go with me and it was basically a big adventure with a nice payday, for a kid at least.

If it wasn't for Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff would be still selling meat from a truck in Minneapolis and if it wasn't for Hulk Hogan, all these Johnny-Come-Lately's that you see out here wrestling, wouldn't be here. I was selling out the world, brother, while they were bumming gas to put in the car to get to high school, so the way that it is now, brother, with Hulk Hogan and the New World Organization of Wrestling, brother, me and the new blood by my side... whatcha gonna do when the New World Organization runs wild on you? Whatcha gonna do?"
