I love the "wasted money" takes....I buy warranties on my vehicles and hope I DON'T have to use them....I mean, we pay auto insurance premium's every single month, but no one is disappointed when you don't wreck your car just because you have insurance. Warranties are insurance. Plain and simple. The biggest thing it does is keeps the service departments honest. That and peace of mind knowing you won't be blindsided with a huge repair bill. It's worth it to me.
License, registration, and proof of warranty, sir.

I never bought warranties in the past but now with everything so electric I just bought one on the Wife’s Lexus. I cannot fix that stuff.
Side note my taillight assembly on my Heep is $530. The warranty that I did not buy was $2000. Profit.

I would suggest to anyone who thinks they have to spend money on an extended warranty to instead put.. I don't know.. $2-3k on the side and then each month put $50 into it. If you ever need to get something done to your car, use that money. If you don't ever have to tap into that money, its still yours, but if you like giving your money away then obviously feel free to get an extended warranty.

This post will get lost in the mix most likely but you can negotiate those extended warranties at the dealership. 30-40% of that price is the true cost of warranty.
That said, I buy them but there are a few issues.
1. Find out if the dealership files the claim and handles the paperwork. That's a big thing whether you realize or not.
2. When we made a claim on tire and wheel it took 2 days for them to get back with an answer. Well guess what...thats two days of your vehicle being sidelined. I had to pay out of pocket and wait to see if claim was approved. Luckily it was and dealership credited me back the $400.
It all depends and I would tell you they're only as good as the dealership selling them.
Lake Charles Toyota is pretty good about backing anything they sell.
Community Honda in Lafayette is awful.
Billy Navarre will make you front the cost or its wait and see.
My latest truck is from Bolton. I bought extended because its a Ford and will he high mileage.
I trade the things back in every 3 years anyway. I just end up getting a refund.
And you do get a refund if you cancel the warranty before the expiration. It's prorated.

quote:It was a warranty company named Louisiana Dealer Service (LDS). Team Honda told me I could take it to any Honda Dealership and it would be honored. Well, the Honda service department in Gonzales did not honor it. They wouldn’t do the work without charging me. I had to bring it back to Baton Rouge. Not the end of the world, but enough of a headache that I don’t trust them anymore, lol. We are discussing extended warranties correct? Not the factory warranty or brand warranty.
Was the warranty a Honda warranty?

I just had my water pump replaced at 97,600 miles. It cost me $355, if I wouldn't have the warranty it would have been $1800 out of pocket.
$1800?! At a dealership, maybe. Why would anyone who is not a blue haired granny take their car to a dealership for a water pump?

If it wouldn't have been under warranty i would have taken it to my buddy. He said It's about $8-900 job because of labor hours, parts are around $400.
I'm pretty handy, watched a YouTube video and decided I wanted no part of it.

When things were made to last, it was a scam.
Now though, for a stove, refrigerator, washer and dryer, you know, major appliances, it's probably cheaper to buy the extended warranty in the lo g run.
Someone should do a study on the life of appliances to see how in line they are with lasting past their warranty.
You really think warranty companies don't already have actuaries?

The last 4 vehicles I owned, put 600,000 miles total. Only one, I had to replace the A/C compressor, the bill was $500.
Try to buy more dependable vehicles.
A extended warranty, more times than not, are a waste of money.

There are exceptions of course, but for the most part, you need that fricking warranty
Those insurance companies must be losing billions. I wonder why they keep underwriting those policies and giving salesmen kick-backs for selling them. I guess they hate money.

Warranties are pretty crafty at not covering the most likely failures in the fine print.

the warranty is a money maker for them.
Bought a brand new car a few months ago and the guy doing the paperwork was completely puzzled I didn’t want any warranties.
Started asking the main reason why and questions like that.

Yeah cause nothing ever goes wrong once a vehicle is out of warranty, right?
Only an idiot buys a modern vehicle without an extended warranty these days.

Sure it's posted somewhere in the thread already. But I even had engineering teachers preach on this. Statistically speaking from a reliability point of vue, you will lose money on buying a warranty. They wouldn't sell them if that wasn't the case. They aren't in the business of being good guys and selling the opportunity to pay less for repairs.
So keep a savings to pay for shite when it breaks and statistically be more likely to keep your money in your own pockets.

I've never viewed insurance or warranties as something needed because of a statistical likelihood.
If the replacement cost of something is greater than we can handle without extreme changes to our livelihood, we will self insure or warranty ourselves.
Too many people are over extending themselves on purchases so it does not allow them to do so.
Vacation insurance, HELL NO.
Flood insurance, absolutely
Extended car warranties, depends
Long term disability, yes
Extended warranty on an appliance, absolutely not

Jeezuz man, it's just like insurance. You have any idea how expensive repairs are today? It's next to impossible to do it yourself, so you;re screwed if anything happens.

Extended warranties are only good if they are from the manufacturer. So do not ever buy a warranty from a ³rd party floozie.
Also instead of buying a brand new vehicle why not buy used from a maker who actually makes quality? Like the older tundras and Chevies, for example.
