i served on an HOA board (after showing up to a meeting and seeing that two old ladies where running that were big time Karens, i threw my name in)
there were 5 of us, and everytime the Karens on the board wanted to impose their views, i reference the Covenant Agreement for the HoA that stated "that isn't visible from the street, a neighbor's property, an adjacent common area
if you couldn't see it, they couldn't enforce it... second pushback i used was if the city ordinances or codes dictate something, let the city/parish enforce it....
most aggravating 2 years, thankfully we had 5 members, 2 karens and 3 reasonable board members...... both Karen's moved shortly after our term

I've heard of things like a neighborhood gate needing to be replaced. Well the HOA is lucky, because the president's husband runs a construction company and he'll replace it for the low price of tree-fiddy thousand.
Somebody raises a question and the HOA gets more bids like they're supposed to, and they're actually reasonable bids, so the HOA pres bans those companies from the development so that the HOA has to hire the president's husband.
HOA's are really just tiny banana republics.

How about getting rid of the bullshite where they can foreclose on you for homeowners dues with just a judges order?
Then, sell for just what they have in it.

When i first moved in the HOA was staffed by a bunch of Karens. It took me a week or two to realize they all walked the hood every evening, carrying clipboards to write down any discretions that needed a nastygram delivered.
There was a rule that said "No permanent basketball goals, temp only. When my daughter got a little older, I got a temp. goal. I put it out one Friday evening and we played. I wheeled it to the backyard on Sunday evening. Tuesday, I got a nastygram from an attorney about the goal, demanding that I wheel it out to play, wheel it back to the backyard at the end of play.
I sent the attorney a letter, explaining that that was clearly not what the rule said, and asked if he would like to escalate it. He did not.
Apparently, standing in your front yard and yelling to your neighbor to "Watch out, here comes the Clipboard count" is frowned upon, but not against the rules either. Offering to find a CPA to audit the books caused 4 of them to resign.
I have been left lone by the HOA for 22+ years.

Close: The HOA Karen Bill
And to the earlier question of who complains about 1st Responders parked in the driveway?
The HOA Karen who also wants to defund the police and does not want EMS responding to the unvaccinated.

My little subdivision had some people on our neighborhood group try top start a HOA. 95% of the people here shot that shite right down. We are right outside the city of Denham Springs limits. Most of us know each other. I see a couple of benefits of having one but the BS I've seen that friends and family put up with in one of those neighborhoods, no thank you.

I'm on an HOA board but the covenants are identical to the local municipal code. So we don't have to send nastygrams, we can just be kvnts on the neighborhood facebook page and if the kvntiness doesn't work, we call county code enforcement. And when code enforcement comes out, they don't just go to the house you reported, they go tag everyone in the neighborhood for violations.
It's the perfect setup.

On the flip side we bought into a neighborhood we thought had a HOA, signed documents to follow all the rules, etc. at our closing, then later learned a HOA was never truly formed, so the document we signed was bullshite. At first I thought "cool, no HOA", then quickly changed my tune.
I don't care what color your garage door is, or if you need to park your work truck in your driveway, or if you leave your trashcan at the road a little long. However, I do care about the people that let their place look like absolute arse, or have 3 cars parked on their lawn, or the rented house that has the SWAT team show up at 2am to arrest the shitty tenant for selling drugs, or the replacement tenant who ran his construction company out of the house and would park his excavator on the driveway on days he didn't need it then later bought an old school bus and parked is on the front yard for 2+ months until the city got involved, or the guy directly across the street from me who bought a project Mustang but didn't have room for it so it sat on his lawn for 6 months, it finally disappeared one day, turned out he traded it for an equally shitty Jeep, which also sat on the front lawn at all times. Just last week someone started parking his 18 wheeler in front of his house.
This isn't some dump either, it's a decent subdivision in Lafayette that starts around $250,000. I hate my neighborhood, I'll never live in a neighborhood without an HOA again.

Agreed. And I'll take it a step further. If you're going to park your vehicle in your driveway, because you can't manage your space and have to store useless plastic garbage in your garage, then don't block the sidewalk. You don't own that. You may own your driveway, but you don't own the sidewalk.

This is the most aggravating one. Glad to see this.

Home owners who leave their cans at the street ALL week should be fined!

HOA rules state that you can't park a commercial truck. And the truck doesn't comfortably fit in his garage, so he rents a parking spot from a local body shop to park his company truck. H
He should just get a big vinyl magnet the color of the vehicle and put it over the company name on the door when he gets home

Hate to tell you but between Beth dealing, construction companies being run, and 18 wheelers being stored..it’s a dump.

So let’s say you live in a condo complex and it needs a new roof and a couple owners decide they just won’t pay the dues. Just say frick it and everyone else just pay more with no repercussions to the deadbeats?
