This tiny village collected about as much through fines and forfeitures as Shreveport, the state’s third-largest city

The average municipality in the U.S. gets 1.7% of its revenue from fines and forfeitures, according to the Urban Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that promotes equity. In Fenton, it’s 92.5%.

Would like to see the numbers on St. Gabriel. They have to be up there, those police sit on Hwy 30 preying on people.

ETA: Pretty sure they also run a mayor’s court

I thought it was illegal for it to be more than 15% or something

Pretty interesting. Pretty sad. They must be really nitpicking on speed or people around there just are unable to learn.

The was a small town in LA that had village status (I think it was in Pine Prarie) and the speed trap was basically family-run. The dad was the village police chief, the son was the deputy and the daughter-in-law was the dispatch

I wonder if they're even getting people for even three or four mph over just because they know the mayor will enforce it.

I got cited by the Olla police (mayor’s court) for traveling in the left lane on a state highway. I hadn’t seen another car on the road in ten minutes.

Ended up not having to pay it because the cop cited me under a state statute and mayors courts can’t prosecute state statutes.

Many towns/villages in LA operate this way. Totally illegal. No one in Baton Rouge have the balls to stop this crap.

Pine Prarie

It’s definitely Pine Prairie

I’ve gotten a handful of tickets through that shithole. $112.50 each time. The a-hole that pulls me over always offers to escort me to the “city hall” to pay the ticket immediately. fricking scam.

Nope, has to be 10mph or more for them to get any $$. Got a buddies ticket fixed years ago there.
Forest Hill has the same scam but if you’re not over 10 they cite you for a seat belt violation $25. Paid it and a year later get an official letter telling me a bench warrant would be issued if I didn’t pay. Whoever was handling the fines was embezzling the cash, I paid with a cc and faxed (they didn’t have a computer)??them the proof.

Fenton is a shithole. Only good thing is the old man selling satsumas on the south side of town. Drive through it all the time during hunting szn and never got a ticket but always see cops. I never speed in LA with TX plates.
