I just moved into a new neighborhood. My neighbor moved in a week before me and immediately put a fence up. He just came over while I was outside and asked if I was going to get a fence I told him yes and he told me hat he put his fence 8 inches back onto his property and didn't want my fence to touch his. Is this normal and can I still put my fence up on the property line? No one will be able to cut the grass between there but why should I give up part of my backyard. What would the OT do.

If his fence is 8 inches from his property line and you put your fence on your property line, there will be 8 inches of space between them and your fences won't touch, which is what he wants.

What is the issue?

get someone to come out and survey your property and mark your property line. Then build your fence on the very edge your property. Ignore your neighbor unless his fence is on your property.

If there's a gap, it's up to him to maintain it. If he doesn't, the HOA can come in and fine him.

Why put up a fence? You got a free fence and and 8 inches more yard. Buy him a six pack and tell him thanks.

Good fences make good neighbors.

Guy sounds like a fricking idiot if he just gives up an 8 inch strip of his property like that.

My check your POA covenants. Usually there is a rule that all fences should touch/intersect with each other to eliminate this exact issue.

Your neighbor sounds like an a-hole. Why wouldn't he just put the fence on the property line and it be the lot divider.

Sounds like some shite that would happen in Youngsville.

There's already a fence. I don't see the issue.

Why couldn't you? It's your property. Make sure your new fence matches the lot map. That's all you should be concerned with.

Call it trashy, of course. And his problem. But in reality, it will make your yard look like shite to.

Sounds like your lot just grew 8 inches. Don't put a fence up. Just enjoy his and the added property.

Plus, I think after a certain number of years, that 8" becomes yours.

I'm trying to decide if this is a trick question. On the surface, it's so simple.

Usually info in the HOA on how to handle adjoining fences. If not contact your HOA and get some direction in writing.
