It seems odd to me that your neighbor would care that you couldn't join your fence to his. What would be the reason for that?

How can he tie in the fences he wants to build now? Douche neighbor is going to make him build another fence on his side?

Exactly.

OP, you should probably check the HOA bylaws to see if you can even have a double fence like that.

There is no HOA that's one reason I liked this neighborhood. Doesn't seem like such a good idea now. They probably could have helped.

Just put your own fence right on the property line. Make sure your fence is taller than his so it messes up the aesthetics of his own fence.

just moved into a new neighborhood. My neighbor moved in a week before me and immediately put a fence up. He just came over while I was outside and asked if I was going to get a fence I told him yes and he told me hat he put his fence 8 inches back onto his property and didn't want my fence to touch his. Is this normal and can I still put my fence up on the property line? No one will be able to cut the grass between there but why should I give up part of my backyard. What would the OT do.

We're gonna need a MS paint drawing to fully understand.

Be sure to accurately portray the single wides

If there's no HOA sounds like there is nothing really you can do. I second telling your neighbor you'll give him half of that side of the fence because you can't just extend onto his property I would imagine. Either way your he sounds like the perfect mixture of a-hole and tard so prayers sent. Hope you don't have to live beside him for the next 30 years.

Eta and if he says no and you have to build on your property line, when that 8 inch gap inevitablely starts looking like shite be a complete dick about making him upkeep it.

I had a roommate a few years ago who burned down one side of my fence. I could send him to your house, and he will have this taken care of by noon tomorrow

Well, I guess you're building a double fence, then.

That's a good idea.

We have an invisible fence for our dog. The back of our property is a lake with a wooden bulkhead. Our dog jumped in immediately on the first day we bought the house and couldn't get out. So we went with DogWatch's invisible fence. We have a fairly large yard and for about $1,700, our dog is safe and contained.

I would point out that he is going to have to mow and maintain the 8" gap if he doesn't let you join to his fence. If this doesn't convince him then he is even dumber than I first thought.

That line is nothing more than one mans transmission of his fathers way of thinking and his fathers before him. I'll take the side of the other guy who wonders why the only time they see each other is when it's time to mend the fence.

Leaving a 8" gap between 2 parallel fence lines is asinine.

Please go over and ask this guy what is the end game he's trying to get to. I'd really like to know.

It might not have happened in your case, but it definitely could if all of the elements of adverse possession (not sure what it is called in Louisiana) are met

Perhaps he put his fence 8 inches back to be sure that it wouldn't be close to touching your fence... who cares about the reasoning. It's his house and his fence so he can do it how he wants. Sounds like he wanted to let you know he came back on his own property line so you would be aware he wanted a little space between the fences, and also that you didn't assume those 8 inches were yours.

Sounds like he's just communicating... a great need in a good relationship. Don't let your fence touch his... don't cut grass in between. His problem. It more than likely will not effect your life. This answer seems obvious.

And if you said his reasoning was because of his big dog maybe he doesn't want your dog and his dog rubbing noses and pissing all over the fence all afternoon

I think what he really wants is me to put my fence a couple feet away so he only gave up 8 inches he expects me to give up a few feet and that's not gonna happen
