This

Why build a new fence just to have 8" of dead space to grow?

If you're referring to the 8 inches, that's still his property. Fences don't determine the property lines.
yeah I was talking about if I had to move my fence back so he could mow between there

Perhaps he put his fence 8 inches back to be sure that it wouldn't be close to touching your fence

Which is retarded.

who cares about the reasoning.

The guy that has to deal with this dumbass and have an 8 inch gap between the 2 fences.

quote:

Sounds like he wanted to let you know he came back on his own property line so you would be aware he wanted a little space between the fences,

Whixh, again, is retarded along with unnecessary.

It might not have happened in your case, but it definitely could if all of the elements of adverse possession (not sure what it is called in Louisiana) are met

Dude, 20K spent and no matter were a fence line has been, that dose NOT mark a line, even after 40+ years of maintaining said land.

Tell him to want in one hand and shite in the other and see which one fills up faster.

Just put an 8ft brick wall right on your the edge of your property line, problem solved. Grass or brush from those 8" won't harm a wall. If you put up a wooden fence that grass and brush will expedite rot and pushing on it.

Grow weed on that 8" then call cops and tell them your neighbor is growing marijuana on his property.

That line is nothing more than one mans transmission of his fathers way of thinking and his fathers before him. I'll take the side of the other guy who wonders why the only time they see each other is when it's time to mend the fence.

Back in my surveying days, we once shot a property line that had a wooden fence on it. Property owner A owned the fence and it was about 3 inches within her property...however, the concrete for the fence posts encroached upon property owner B's property by about another 3 inches. B forced A to tear the fence down.

I learned two very valuable lessons from this incident:

1. Just how petty people can be.

2. "Property disputes" are usually about a whole lot more than just property disputes. Which ties back in to lesson #1.

That's fricking bizarre.

Is this normal

No.

quote:

can I still put my fence up on the property line?

Yes.

quote:

No one will be able to cut the grass between there but why should I give up part of my backyard.

That's his property, his problem, you shouldn't give up anything.

quote:

What would the OT do.

First, ask the dude why he put his fence 8" back from the property line. Second, put my fence right up to the property line.

If you want a fence there, this is what you'll have to do to avoid all the stuff that's going to grow between the fences.

Did you ask him how he plans to upkeep that 8 inches of property so it's not a jungle? Is going to hang from the top of the fence and spray weed spray? Whole thing makes no sense at all.

why would you assume that's what he actually meant? Then don't give up a few feet. Put it on your property line. There will still be space. You have made 0 sacrifices in this situation... I assume you were planning on putting the fence on your property line originally. Stop overthinking it.

There was a 2 ft gap between our fence and our neighbors growing up. Never an issue

Yep, about 50k in timber. Assholes jumped way over their line. Cost them almost 70k.

Yall seem to be missing the issue.

How can he tie in the fences he wants to build now? Douche neighbor is going to make him build another fence on his side?

OP: If he says no at first to you tying your fence in, maybe offer him half of what he paid for that one side of the fence? Then he would maybe let you tie it in

it clicked to me right there what the issue is. sounds like the neighbor just doesn't want you benefiting from 1 of his 3 sides of his fence he put in.

seems really petty on his end. especially to have built it 8 inches inside his line.

i had a neighbor ask to tie into mine once and i was like WGAF, it's a fence, i'll help you when it gets to that point and he acted like i was the nicest guy in the world.
