Maybe there's a way to carve out "store" hot food vs restaurant hot food? But, yeah, you bring up a good point!

I'm personally in huge support of SNAP restrictions as a concept, but once you get into the nitty gritty of it like this, you run into all of these "what-if" obstacles that I kinda don't blame them for throwing their hands up and letting people buy whatever the hell they want for as long as they have.

I mean, just the past few weeks we've watched foreigners totally mind blown in our stores, and new junk foods come out literally every day. You can say, "No X Item on SNAP" and by tomorrow, Y Item has arrived in stores for the first time.

Although.. If programs like WIC can do it, I don't see why SNAP can't. I guess they just define the overall purpose of those two programs quite differently?

there is - in Louisiana the store has to sell ‘groceries’ like milk & bread in order to be put into the system for EBT. The store point of sale systems have to be approved by the state - there are codes when an item is scanned - and only certain codes are allowed to be paid by food stamps. Which is why when some people say ‘I saw someone buying hot boiled crawfish with food stamps’ - they are either lying or the store has tampered with their point of sale systems or there is a dishonest cashier - and is committing fraud. Which, unlike many other things, the food stamp office used to take seriously so it should be reported. OR the person is using welfare money (FITAP) which can be used on anything.

There are times after emergencies when hot food from grocery convenience can be bought, but it’s usually for a short amount of time, and the state monitors that.

Restaurants cannot just tap into the state’s ebt system.

I worked for food stamps years ago and an aspect of my job now deals a lot with social services - so I unfortunately keep up with this.

Several convenience stores accept EBT. I’ve asked several clerks what customers use it for. They said energy type drinks, jerky etc. I was told that several of their regulars said they had more than they could spend on grocery needs. They also said folks would buy items to resale for cash to use on other items.

Looking forward to KJB's 73 page dissent explaining how preventing black folks from using taxpayer money to buy purple drank is akin to making blacks order from the back of the restaurant.
