One day off is no big deal. Here is the factor, demanding employees to commute on possible closed roads is a huge liability for companies.

Meh. Any inclement weather carries risk. Again, with today s instant information, a decision can be made at 6 AM and everyone should know what to do by the time their coffee has finished brewing.

I can't understand, especially in today's media world with instant access, that decision to close is done a day in advance.
Very easily schools, etc. can decide to close with a decision made at 5-6 this morning and everyone would know about it.
Just asinine to make the call yesterday

Fair enough.

I'm not privy to how those decisions are made but there's possibly a reason they choose to pull the trigger early. It does seem like a lot of times you can pull a wait and see when people aren't going to potentially need to evacuate. Of course, people will bitch about waiting so long to decide. It's a no win game.

I do understand how it's probably frustrating to have kids running around and no snow to go play in. How losing a day of work, especially at the end of the month is frustrating. shite ain't an exact science, and you take that cost vs the low potential of a 2014 traffic shitshow taking place.

Schools like to make the call early so parents can plan for daycare, etc for the younger students. If the call is made the morning of then it is a scramble to make arrangements or miss work. That’s my theory at least....

Are your employees instant information? Drop at a moments notice?

People expect to know what is expected of them in an appropriate time frame. Not a moments notice.

It's not that hard.
If schools close you do this, if they open you do that.
I have kids and my wife and I both work
It can be handled easily. We're not snowflakes
Pun intended.

If I'm gonna be stuck somewhere all day, it might as well be here. Free coffee, free shitters, plus we got a ton of food and its < 5 min drive home.

It's gonna rain. The pattern is flipping warm for us in the east, despite what the northern Midwest looks like today.

For real. There are three of us here this AM out of 300 something. Wake up. Evaluate the travel situation and make the best decision for you. No need to cancel shite because of what MIGHT happen.

My work didn't call today off until after 4 PM yesterday, and it was pretty much only following suit due to schools closing. I understand the hate for it, but they waited as long as possible yesterday and called it when everyone would have time to talk to their boss about today and make last minute plans. Also a heads up to take your laptops home. Make that call after working hours and you're left with no choices.

I think by default that is correct. However people should also be aware of the possibility and make contingency plans if possible if notice is given late.

There are many situations where it’s not that simple though.

A lot of disappointed kids this morning.

It's good practice for adulthood.

You'd think with today's technology they(weather people)would be able to do a better job of predicting weather.

If you make the call at 6, school employees will have already left for work, the early bus routes are already running, and most importantly, parents are suddenly trying to find someone to watch their kids on zero notice.

A situation like this makes the schools look stupid, but the alternative is worse. Better to look foolish when it turns out to be a bluebird day than have a bunch of kids stranded on a bus in subfreezing temperatures.

I grew up in Northern OH and school was never called before, always called that morning. You had an idea if it was going to snow or not, but parents never knew till that morning. You have plan A, B, or C in place in case need to cancel school. Simple as that.

That’s ignorant. This event like many depends on many variables and they did a good job of identifying the variables and ramifications but can’t say for certain what will happen.

Big cuck I kid

I thought about going in this morning but I thought I might have to load trucks because I'd be the only on there. So I said, naw.

Started to go to our Nashville store and grab a few things we needed, but I said naw.

I'm just gonna chill and do the paperwork I brought home.

It really isn't that big of a deal to shut down for one day as a precaution.

About to pull some turkey and cheese on sister Schubert rolls out of the oven and nom nom. Lunch is looking to be banging as well.

You got a better way to solve second order differential equations, doing all the partial derivatives without simplifying assumptions? You know, without the data from every spot on the map? If so, somebody has a bunch of money for you.

There are a ton of variables. This case: concerning timing of cold, forcing for the moisture, where the 850 mb low set up to drive the cold at that layer, and the timing impacted where secondary energy came in that would have enhanced the moisture that could fall. It's why in hard science you have statistical error reported, because every bit of that has error built in.

Very smart people with supercomputers miss this stuff.
