I’ve flown some privately and know the amount of hours and work it takes to get a commercial certification. If feeling nervous it makes me feel better to know there are a couple of pilots up there who know what they’re doing and will die too if we crash. Also there are an insane amount of flights daily that are uneventful.

That said, if they ever start flying remotely or with AI I might change my mind.

The more I read this thread the more I think people don’t actually fear flying, they fear not being in control.

That’s exactly it. And it isn’t illogical, it is human nature.

Flying is the safest form of transportation out there.

Nothing used to phase me but, after a close buddy was in a plane crash, I'd be lying if I said I don't get a little nervous during severe turbulence. Still fly tens of thousands of miles per year though.

Flying >>> driving. If it's over 8 hours away drive time, I prefer to fly.

The actual flying part I've always enjoyed. Takeoffs, and especially landings, bring out the pucker factor for me.

I have zero fear of flying. If it wasn’t for the whole airport/TSA/lines aspect of flying I’d love it. I also wanted to be a pilot when I was growing up though.

Is it fear of heights that makes people afraid to fly?

Yeah, we’re actual people. Reddit is >70% bots at this point. Seriously.
I can’t wrap my head around the exponential growth of that stock. I honestly don’t even know how it generates revenue, on the rare occasions I lurk there I’ve never even noticed ads before

Try flying millitary Space-A. That's how you show up four hours before a flight at 0130, only to be told the C-5 needs another day of repairs, and repeat two more times.

Flew a good bit in the military. Never a C-5 though. Only fixed wing I ever rode in during my time was a C-130. It has been so long ago, I do not remember much other than the loud arse hydraulics aboard. At least we could move around the plane back then (1987-1993). Comfort was not a consideration of the webbed seating.

A friend once told me that it was not heights at all. It was the thought of having 30,000 feet to think about what is happening.

What the odds of it happening twice?

The odds haven’t changed because you’ve been in a crash. Still very low, same as before your crash.

That's a fun takeoff and landing, avoiding the Sandia Mountains.

Yep, and always a guaranteed strong wind the pilot has to contend with. It’s a fun one for sure.

From what I see on my twice a day 38 mile commute, I feel I pretty much risk my life driving to work/home every day. I have a friend that has totaled 3 vehicles in 1 calendar year and none of the 3 accidents were her fault. I’ll take my chances in the air and not even think about it.

I don't fly anymore because I like to be in control. Also, I know I'm more likely to die in an automobile vs an airplane...but I'm also more likely to survive an auto crash vs a plane crash.

You're not in control when someone crosses that yellow line suddenly.

Never a C-5 though

It's weird, because back in the same time period, they had real seats "upstairs," at least on that flight. But I prefer a C-130 no matter what. Well, the fact that they usually took off as scheduled, and the C-5... Didn't. That was a fun three extra days in the Philippines.

Which is why I said it isn’t logical in the first place, but you disagreed and said it was 100% logical
