Science diet sponsors a lot of stuff in vet schools. Their regular formulas no different than Alpo. They get the vets hooked while students.

My lab made it to 16 on ole Roy and Purina dog food from wal mart. Hell growing up we only fed the dogs scraps and they seemed to live forever.

We're talking $50 for a 40 lb bag that lasts him a long time
Purina Dog Chow= $22.96/52# bag.
lasts two weeks with my 7 dogs. They seem to be doing fine. For the price point, that's what they are getting.
I agree with everything in your post. If you can feed your dog a higher quality kibble, do it. If its not in the budget, don't. its your dog and only you can decide what is best for it.
but if Purina chow is the best you can do, it aint that bad.
these feed debates have been ongoing since the first retailer put dog food (or cat food, or chicken food, or horse chow) in a bag. Some are better than others. It comes down to affordability and value for the price.

Did you know that Hills Science diet is crap for food too?
Your vet gets paid by the company to sell that shite. Will even send their child to vet school for free if they sell enough bags. Killed my best buddy Bichon.
We only use Purina Pro Plan now.
It’s true Science Diet is a scam in that vets push it because they have contracts and get kick backs but it’s decent food. You can’t shite on Science Diet and then feel good about using Purina Pro Plan.

Dog Food Advisor, as the DVM on here said, is not a good source of information. Some of those foods DFA recommends on that list are not good to serve dogs and could cause nutritional DCM.
I learned about this issue about 4 months ago because a littermate of my dog died after being diagnosed. My dog has digestion issues and needs a low fat diet. I was using a grain free brand to satisfy that need. They are now adding taurine to it. If the issue is what else is in the food as they suspect, adding taurine does not fix the issue. A lot of companies are adding taurine to dog food now to appease customers because of this, but there is no proof that it fixes the issue.
Less than 2% of dogs are allergic to grains. If anyone is feeding a raw diet or making meals at home, get your vet’s approval as your dog may not be getting the nutrition it needs.
Until they know exactly what is going on, it is recommended to use the foods that fit the WSAVA guidelines, which are listed in the link below. The link is filled with answers to questions some might have and links to studies. Click to find out more

I'm now using Fromm Gold formula instead of their grain free, and my vet fully approves. I also supplement with homecooked chicken and yogurt...also vet approved.

Funny.
No ALPO or Old Roy.

My dogs have been using Orijen for years. This article freaked my wife out.

Ok thanks. The reason I asked is when you mentioned skin conditions I was thinking English Bulldog. We have a 11 week old English Bulldog right now and they are prone to skin conditions. She’s a handful and high maintenance but we sure do love the shite out of her.

Wonder if they are taking sales in to account. Percentage of bags sold vs number of reports. Some of these companies make more than just the name brand you see.

Looks like my Victor is not on the list...which is good, because my dog loves it and he's never had any stomach issues or gross crap that smells terrible.

Let me fill you in on something.
Veterinarians take 1 course in school regarding nutrition and it’s put on by Hills, Purina, or Iam’s.
Also some of their equipment is paid for by these same companies in exchange for them putting bags of their dog/cat food in the front of their store.
How would you feel if McDonalds were to teach the nutrition course for our doctors??

Given how shitty our government is with human health and nutrition and how awful most epidemiology is, I'll withhold judgment and give my dogs a little rapamycin.

Damn. My dog died from dilated cardiomyopathy last year and I fed him Blue for years.
