There is a picture of it happening floating around somewhere online. It occurred right at the drop for the picture.
You mean the photos that the ride takes?

This ride had single seat sensors. Every sensor has to be green and both load ops at either end of the train must hold the release before the computer allows the main operator to dispatch.

Dang man, are you in the roller coaster engineering business?

mechanical failure is a lot scarier and a LOT less likely I'd assume than human user error. Maybe the part was supposed to be replaced and never was, or some other human error IDK. But most of these are built with a safety factor of 3-4x or more.

i'd like to hear his explanation of the actual force a 300lb person exerts on a restraint going 55mph up and down. i'm sure that number is significant.

Someone mentioned -1.5g exerted by the ride. However, I don't think that's in addition to 1g counteracting actual gravity, so the actual acceleration is like 0.5g, so the force exerted on the restraint would be less than half of his body weight.

you’re only held in be a triangle shaped latch that doesn’t even cover your entire legs.
That's why it's so awesome. By far the best kind of restraint.

Same. I fricking hate amusement parks because of the people who run them and the risk/reward analysis part of my brain is flashing BAD IDEA in huge red letters the whole time I am there.
Your brain is stupid.

Son and I rode this ride in early August in the front row. I had a death grip on both of our lap restraints at first (not like it would have mattered had something gone wrong), but after the 2nd drop it wasn’t too bad. Will not be riding anything like this again
Why not? Will you be driving again?

No chance I'd be riding that. I don't care how good they say it is. I need 2 methods of restraint. Full stop.

Isn't this basically the same type of restraint that Velocicoaster has? Just a lap one? I felt SUPER uneasy on that ride the WHOLE time. There were at least 3 or 4 times my butt was not in the seat. My youngest is tall enough for it now and no way I am putting him on it.
And yet, riding Velocicoaster (IMO, the best in the country BTW) 1000 times would likely be markedly safer than your journey to/from Universal.

Now that he has been identified, I've seen a couple of the pictures and he doesn't look that big. There's a pic from his Facebook where he ran the Peachtree Road Race 10k this summer and he looks fairly average to maybe slightly above average size.

My kid was at the park Sunday and rode Goliath=. He said some of the seats felt loose and he was afraid he might fall off.

This incident is a perfect example of how national news is a net negative. An extremely outlying event happens out of millions/billions of iterations and it becomes front page news and starts driving policy and maybe even laws.

There's no reason any of us should have even heard about this.

And you can see the people in this thread almost stretching to ensure their interpretation is from their lizard brain instead of their modern, educated brain.

Half the people on here will say, of bar fights "you realize you're not made of glass and you jump in", when in fact a random bar fight is likely literally a million times more dangerous than riding even a carnival ride.

Nah. Just a coaster nerd from way back. Like, I'm a big enough nerd to read manufacturer patents and take behind the scene tours of coasters. I'm not an expert or close to it, but I know slightly more than most. That info in particular was posted by a Goliath ride op and confirmed by other ride ops of similar coasters.

quote:

Hi I used to be a former operator for this ride at this park. Basically the coaster comes into the station then the operator panel goes red for each individual seat on the ride. As each seat is locked into place by riders the corresponding light turns green on the operator panel. Each seat is then verified by personnel on the loading dock. Once all seats have been verified and locked in place, the two attendants on the loading dock will depress their safety stop to signal to the ride operator that the train is ready to dispatch. Before the safety stops are pressed the operator is unable to dispatch the train. After everything is verified, train is good to go.
