My parents basically forced me on rollercoasters as a kid.. to the point that when we would visit amusement parks on vacation, I would be sick all night at the hotel knowing I would be forced on rides.

Eventually it worked that they got me to actually enjoy them, but today? Nope. Not getting on anything.

Shouldn't rides have some sort of system built in that doesn't allow the ride to commence unless all restraints are properly secured?

This ride had single seat sensors. Every sensor has to be green and both load ops at either end of the train must hold the release before the computer allows the main operator to dispatch.

I think this insinuates that it’s more likely the restraint wasn’t appropriately compressed tight enough rather than catastrophic failure of the restraint system.

But the restraint was up when the train returned to the platform

i've popped a few buttons on my shirt before sitting down after thanksgiving dinner

eta where's that egghead doing the aschsuuallly about centrifugal force?

i'd like to hear his explanation of the actual force a 300lb person exerts on a restraint going 55mph up and down. i'm sure that number is significant.

I would imagine the safety bar wasn’t able to fully engage and this is a human failure of letting him ride vs a safety bar failure

I guarantee you this is a case of employee negligence.

I've been to that park several times. It's in Austell which is not the best area. They therefore don't really attract the cream of the crop as far as employees go. I've seen more often than not the ride attendants horsing around and lackadaisically checking restraints. I bet you the kid performing the safety checks didn't even bother to check the victim's restraint.

see bottomlandbrew's post above.

i agree - but not for that reason. i think he was too fat to be on the ride and nobody knows what kind of exchange was had when loading the car..did he tell the employee to let him ride anyway? i dont think there's a scale before you get on so does the employee make a judgement call?

did the employee just stand on the car and leverage/manhandle that restraint until it 'clicked' and the light turned green to get that guy in?

how much force was being applied to it before the car even left the station and g-forces multiplied that?

My dad did the same. But I got to where I liked the coasters. But I remeber being forced to ride them at six flags.

I’ve ridden Goliath a couple times. I’m surprised that the restraint which failed didn’t fail on the first hill after the initial plunge down the tall peak at the start of the ride.
I remember that as being the most negative g’s one gets during the ride.

So it must have failed on the first of the three humps at the end.

Feel horrible for him and the family.

It may have been a size issue, but at the point in the ride where it happened, it is a much more mild section than the first 2 drops and the negative g's that follow them when you crest the hills. I am leaning more towards mechnical failure, which is more scary

the report will come out but maybe that weakened/bent the restraint system enough that the next hill caused it to fail.

didnt the ride stop afterwards? that would be consistent with what BB said above; 'green' status on that car turned red mid-ride and the whole ride shut down immediately after that restraint failed.

just thinking out loud..

It feels like an overreaction to tear the entire ride down. But at the same time, even once any malfunctions are fixed, you will find very few people wanting to get on the exact ride that someone previously died on.

A lady slipped out of New Texas Giant in Arlington in 2013. They installed seat belts, and that roller coaster is among the most popular in the park.

Goliath is the flagship attraction at Six Flags over Georgia. It shouldn't come down, particularly if it is found that this was a fault of a person's exceptional body physics or operator error rather than a maintenance issue.

The first time I rode the Scream Machine there you only had a small lap bar and it had about 3 inches of give. On some of the negative G hills the give in the bar was very unnerving…I thought I was going to fly out of the damn thing.

Good thing I wore my brown pants.
