Damn, you seem pretty emotionally invested in people continuing to ride roller coasters

Do you have some investment or job related to carnival rides? Or just a big enthusiast?

This incident is a perfect example of how national news is a net negative. An extremely outlying event happens out of millions/billions of iterations and it becomes front page news and starts driving policy and maybe even laws.
I can agree with this in regards to the potential for knee-jerk reactions.

There's no reason any of us should have even heard about this.
However, this is just unrealistic all the way around.

I'm not fat. Roller coasters without multiple restraints are stupid.

There are people that raise their hips a bit off the seat so when the attendant comes by and they push down on the lap bar it doesn't get tight. They have about 4 inches of gaps that they can get more "air time."
I did not like my airtime. lol

Why not? Will you be driving again?
Yes I will. I will also have control of my car. The ability to read other cars and take evasive action if necessary. Multiple safety points and systems to proctect me. Not just a lap bar that counts on my knees or hips not being flexible enough to eject me, which is what the ride wants you to feel.
Also, driving is damn near a neccessity. Riding a poorly designed, maintained, or operated roller coaster isn't.

To add insult to injury. The last 2 pictures of you alive and your arse all hanging out.

I remember as a kid riding the 'Texas Giant' at Six Flags Over Texas with my dad. It had the single metal bar that folded over the top of your thighs. After we reached the top of a climb and went down my arse started to fly out of the seat and forward out of the car.
Haven't ridden a single one since then.

Why? Chances of whatever reason you had to quit riding killing you are low

quote:I didn't say it was realistic to not be in the news. But I AM saying that supposedly college educated people should be able to avoid the emotional response here.
However, this is just unrealistic all the way around.
We constantly complain about "you can't hate the media enough", but then run like guppies to feed on these stories of massively outlying events that likely tell you nothing about risk - other than to underscore how truly safe these rides are.
We claim to understand math, then we extrapolate massively outlying events into forward expectations that are unrealistic.
Who knows how accurate this is, but I ran some of the stats through AI and it says for truly external deaths (i.e. excluding people with like heart conditions who ride anyway), the risk of dying is 1 in 273 million. I would submit that one's proud reaction to that should never be "you won't get ME anywhere near those rides!!!!".

quote:You must be thinking of someone else. I have said the EXACT same thing about that stupid incident as well. There's no reason whatsoever that we should all know about it - even if it HAD been a gang rape. And yet we do. And now it's an international news story that will most certainly impact policies and elections - and possibly even laws.
Now do the Cornell gangbang, the Lindsay Clancy case, or any other national news you and your fellow leftist commie scum rage over
The reaction of some of you in this thread would be "I'm never going to college" because of one story.
