The family of Maxwell Gruver, the LSU fraternity pledge who died last year in a hazing incident, filed a federal lawsuit on Thursday seeking a trial by jury and $25 million in damages from LSU, the national and local Phi Delta Theta fraternity and a number of fraternity members, according to the suit.

LSU is royally screwed if everything presented in that suit is true.

Looks like concession prices aren't dropping anytime soon

"The Gruver family alleges in their lawsuit that LSU’s and Phi Delta Theta’s failure to end the tradition of hazing at the chapter was driven by a broken model of self-governance and outdated gender stereotypes about young men engaging in masculine rites of passage — in direct violation of Title IX’s prohibition of sex discrimination."
Damn Title IX, you scary

Attorneys argue in the lawsuit that LSU misleads its students about the value of Greek Life by promoting it as a "valuable educational opportunity" while simultaneously not publicizing or reporting on incidents of hazing and misconduct.
"The reality at LSU is that male students like Max face the risk of serious injury and death when they seek educational benefits and opportunities offered through LSU's Greek letter fraternity system, and the risk to male students at LSU is likely far worse than the television portrayals," according to the lawsuit.
Attorneys point to prior instances of male-only fraternities violating university policies, including that only four of the university's 27 fraternity's "were without risk-management violations in the five years preceding Max's death," a statistic The Advocate has previously reported. They allege, however, that female-only sororities receive harsher and longer sanctions for hazing than their male-only counterparts, which they believe violates Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.
"Although LSU treats the hazing of females as unacceptable, it minimizes the hazing of males as 'boys being boys' engaging in masculine rites of passage," according to the lawsuit.
Title IX eh? That will be interesting.

And LSU Greek life just got that much closer to being killed off

I'm sorry their kid died, but for those looking for the definition of the word "trashy" this is it.
And that's from a guy who generally hates all frats and their ilk.

I'm going to come off as extremely harsh, but this is a bit much.
It's a tragedy their son passed, but taking down a whole university shouldn't be the punishment for a group of frat tools taking hazing way too far.
Go after every one of those dorks. They definitely earned that.

That will bring him back. The guy chose to participate as an adult in stupid shite that was presented to him. It's a sad and unfortunate situation but 25 million? Come on.

I just can't get over how damn dumb you have to be to force someone to drink Everclear. They should be locked up for their stupidity if nothing else.

Well, there you have it. The government is compelling culture. We've lost, ladies and gentlemen (oops, that's a fine right there).

This one I can buy, though. You turn your back to straight up criminal activity when you knew or should have known (i.e., are negligent), you are liable. Otherwise, only the fraternity should have to pay. But how much control does a campus need to exert on a club/other entity is the real question.

Congratulations lawyers. You scumbags have officially ruined society.
