While Louisiana the state may have shitty schools, LSU is not that bad. Decent for a big state school and we will pull in more out of state people as the football team wins more.

LSU is way behind other flagship schools from nearby states. Texas....ok...way out of Louisiana's league....Alabama....way better,,,,Florida....Georgia....even Oklahoma, who I hope we trounce on December 28th, kicks our arse academically. Why is that?

Not good students.

That isn’t to say that one won’t be successful attending LSU.

I have experience at both LSU and three other top 100 public universities, one for my master's, one for my post-bac, and now one for my MD/PhD. I honestly think if you took LSU out of Louisiana, it would rank more favorably, as a good portion (20%) of the US News rankings relies on reputation alone, and LA has an extremely poor reputation around the US.

In terms of academics, I found LSU's insistence on tenured faculty teaching intro courses more beneficial for students, as the GTA approach I saw at other universities seemed much more haphazard, and was worse overall for the students. Again that's just my anecdotal experience.

Saying 20 for reputation is a bit misleading.

But I get your overall point.

But then, we could do the same for other schools. And who is to say that ole miss 162 wouldn’t leap past LSU?

The US News uses "expert opinion" weighted 20% of the overall score, if I read the rubric right. I'm extremely skeptical of the ability of any of these experts, often college administrators themselves, to know the quality of each department of each national university to the degree that whatever knowledge they do have could possibly be qualified as 'expertise.' I'd wager most of their expertise is based on the reputation of the university alone.

Where did I preclude such a scenario? Given that the USNWR's methodology is heavily based on non-academic factors ( such as social mobility, financial resources, and expert opinion), shouldn't we treat these rankings for what they are? They aren't meaningful rankings, just guidelines for comparison along a very particular rubric.

I have enough experience at top 100 schools to see how they can game the system. In one example, one school didn't allow kids to fail a particular class in order to keep matriculation rates up, so they would give students who failed an Incomplete and then replace the grade after the student did some sort of make up assignment. That might not sound egregious except this was done with the specific intent of ensuring the school remained in the top 100 of these rankings. LSU, to its credit, never did that while I was there.

That's not to say LSU was perfect at the administration level by any means.

So, you don’t know, but you are skeptical and would bet.

Makes sense

You thought tank would improve. With no basis.

I get it. You are invested in this.

The statement was that it was decent for a state school. It isn’t. And certainly not for the flagship state school. It’s that simple.
