I had a neighbor who was like this. An old World War II vet and widower. When I was a kid, a couple of times a year he’d fly out west to visit his kids and grandkids. I’d collect his mail and water the garden for him. He’d pay me $20 in fives or and sometimes the damn things would be silver certificates! Anyway, when he died about 15 years ago his kids found about $100k stashed in various places, mostly in fives, tens, and twenties.

I had an uncle like that. He made his money in cash exchanges only. Nothing illegal, but he only dealt cash. He was an old school NOLA kid. Always found ways to make money. Whether it was a fruit stand or selling water bottles during Mardi Gras. When the Packers came to NOLA for the Super Bowl, he took some wooden triangle blocks, drilled holes, painted them yellow and attached them to green beads. Make an arse load of cash. He paid for my parents’ wedding reception in cash. Too bad he passed away. He was a kind man.

My paw paw used to show me all of the places he had cash hidden in his house in case he dropped dead suddenly. He made me remember them all.
He was on the local Bank Board and in 1965 when the new clad US coinage came out, he bought the entire bank’s stock of dimes, quarters, halves, and Silver Dollars for their face value.
When he died in ‘74 we spent months finding coins stashed about his town house.
Good times, I’ve still got a few of them.

If you pay contractors and buy tractors with a stack of cash, word gets out among the trash that the old man has cash.
This is what happened to the couple on Highland Road that was killed by the two Mexicans that worked for them. They collected cash for a bunch of their rental properties and kept it in a big safe in their house. Their foreman arranged to borrow some money to buy a truck and came by their house where the old guy went in the back and came back with a stack of bills. The foreman got his brother, went back and beat them until they opened the safe and then they killed them both and stole all the money. Tragic and those frickers need to burn.

My grandmother. She was so pissed when the government started doing direct deposit only for social security.
She had thousands of dollars hidden throughout the house and never told anyone. My grandfather decided to move a couple years after she died and my dad and aunt found something like $7k just in two rooms. They ended up having to unpack a lot of stuff that was being donated to go through to check for cash in like every pocket of every piece of clothing among other things.
There's no telling how much cash got left that the new owners have come across.

I prefer to use cash when I can. I have a gambling stash that I use for other things as well.

My paw paw had 38 acres in Central/Pride but it was pretty country even in the 80s. He said it was all dirt roads in 1939 when he bought it. He told me he paid $800 for it. I think it's worth around 800-900k right now. Pretty decent ROI.
It'll be developed for a neighborhood or something like that when my dad and his sister decide to sell it. Central school districts and all.

My FIL does this but mainly its because he doesn't want his wife to know anything about their finances and doesn't want her to have a debit card. He gives her an allowance and she's not allowed to inquire about bank accounts, bills, and whatnot.
There's no accounting for eccentric people, but generally speaking, I find that trashier people use cash for basic shite like going to the grocery store or buying food. I always assumed it was because they lacked self control to not overdraft.
Physical money is dirty as hell and its inefficient to have a bunch of coins everywhere.

My grandpa used cash mostly for most of the reasons mentioned already. He even had a old butter tub in the fridge that he kept a few hundred in. Someone that live around him eventually stole it one day.
A great grandfather used to keep cash in a suitcase under the bed.
I rarely ever use cash. The credit card rewards are just too much to pass up on for people with just a little common sense and self control.

I had a great uncle that went by cash only. He owned a general store. Whenever someone paid with a fifty or hundred dollar bill he just put it in his pocket and didn't record the sale.
When he died my dad and his brothers and sisters had to clean out the store, and his house because there were no children. They found envelopes with cash all over the place... under floor boards, in the attic, stuffed in coffee cans. They also found cans of silver coins all over the place because my great uncle hoarded silver coins. There were several hundred thousand dollars squirrels away.
I'm sure there is more in the walls, and probably cans of silver coins buried around the property even today.

credit card companies aren't making their money off of us.
We own a retail store here in Bham. The transaction fees we pay for the privilege of accepting your credit card are astronomical. While my business pays that fee, it’s my customers that truly pay that.
I always get a kick out of people that think they are getting shite “for free” using their credit card points. You paid out the arse for those points.

I only pay cash for ammunition, never leave a way to track it (I don't own any firearms either...).

When I was a bartender and coming home with cash every night, I would deposit large bills in my bank and keep 1’s and change (usually $50 in ones/per shift and a few bucks worth of change) in a shoebox in my closet. I’d take the shoebox to the bank at the end of the month and use it for rent money. Bank tellers probably hated me but oh well.
