My brother in law.

He's been everywhere, seen everything, and done everything else three times. Funny though I've known him for 25 years and I've never seen him leave a 300 mile radius.

Yep, I have a coworker like that. No matter what you say, he has a similar but worse or better story

I don’t believe any of you boys know a real topper like a guy I knew.

Yep. Know one. I’ve made up ridiculous stories just to see how he will try to top them.

Yep. At work. If you tell him you bought a 75" tv. He will tell you that's what he has in Garage and he has 3. 80" TVs in house. It never stops

One uppers for sure. I have a lot of them in my social circle. It’s a narcissistic trait.

I remember doing this in elementary school. A kid had gotten back from Disney, and another kid said, "well I've been three times!" Another one chimed in with I've been 5! I exclaimed I'd been 7 times. I'd never been at all, and I believe I was in 2nd grade at the time.

I still remember everything about when it happened, and experience shame/cringe thinking about it.

But the fact that everyone in this thread knows exactly who that guy/gal is, and so does everyone at your work/church etc., should trigger the one uppers into some introspection.

In my quest to never be this person I read a study once that stated never share a relative story to the one that's being told in a group setting. Kinda always stuck with me.

I think that sharing a relative story is fine, that's probably pretty normal in a group setting. But sharing a relative story to every single story being told is where things get annoying.

I'm right there with you. Its not even on purpose. I came to the conclusion it was my way of also being relevant in the topic of conversation. Anyway, it took a long time to re-train myself to be last one to speak. Not jumping in comes naturally now but it took years to coach out of my immediate response.

We had a guy in our friends group like this back in the day. We called him The One-Upper. We would make up ridiculously outlandish stories to watch him try to one up them. Good times.

The only thing worse than the One-Upper, is the One-Downer. This is the worst person to be around if you're going through a hard time, cause they've been through worse. It's narcissistic behavior than turns the discussion to be focused on them, plus eases their conscience about not doing anything to help you when you need it.

Yeah, those are the one-uppers! They're annoying as shite...so what you do is you say something totally outrageous and completely false so that they really have to pour it on with their over-inflated imagination. Then when his story is completed, everyone bust out and laugh.

Also, the older guys who must've got picked on in school seems to listen to all the conversations around him and looks up things on his cell so that it appears he knows what he's talking about. I call it, artificial intelligence!

Yes. A friend of mine so bad at this. That he's been dead 18 years now and we still use his name whenever we talk about someone always one upping someone else.
