With this kind of PhD he can get a job at a firm like Citadel and make $25K a month as an intern.

Yeah he can. Its like he is a grungier, less charming, and yet somehow more educated Will Hunting

a lot more to this story

I agree. While there are many totally worthless doctoral degrees being cranked out by 3-rate universities. Princeton certainly isn't one of those. And STEM degrees are very rarely junk. Two possibilities come to mind.

1. The guy's dissertation research might be so narrowly focused that it has no real Chem E application at all.

2. The guy's major professor has been giving him "kiss of death" letters of recommendation.

SpaceX has openings for Chemical Engineers at Bastrop Tx location.
Negative I see:”Must be willing to work the following hours:
2nd shift-M-F 5pm-5am.

That doesn’t sound great but I would take it to get my foot in the door.
I had to work nights my first couple years as a nurse but it wasn’t 60 hours a week.

I have read a lot about the struggles of professionals getting jobs, especially outside of a few non-glamorous market

i work in tech sales and i've met a grand total of 3 new white guys in sales or tech in the last 5 years. compared to every other minority you can imagine. some are super capable and that's OK, but the rise of account manager women and Black/Asian/Indian guys that read off a script on a rundown of their customer environments has skyrocketed.

Princeton in 2024 with his Ph.D. in chemical engineering. And he still doesn’t have a job.

That wouldn't have been newsworthy even 20 years ago. I had an engineering professor state that graduate degrees in engineering were only worth getting if you planned to stay in academics and research and could limit your employment prospects in some cases. MBA, med school, JD...anything else would pay better. My fiancee got her Ph.D. in pathology full knowing that it would mean zero good jobs except slaving away in a lab for a pittance. Combined with her DMD and board certification, she does very well in academics now. Over specialization has been an employment killer for decades.

You only need an advanced degree in the following circumstances:

1. Law
2. Medical Doctors
3. You want to teach in college

That's it. No one else needs an advanced degree.

That is the problem

He has the profile of employment till the 1980's

That does not work today as we speed headlong into Idiocracy.

Apparently he’s 30 and doesn't even have an internship or assistantship. If you do a citation search for publications he shows up 4 times and it’s for a hyper niche topic.

After rereading his story he’s trolling or has some ulterior motive. The guy has two parents with doctorates an Ivy League degree and was able to catch the attention of the WSJ,,,,but can’t write an effective resume.

His chef kiss is that although he’s never had a job and lives in the basement he feels happy with his investment portfolio.

If he can’t find a job then he doesn’t want one. Waste Management is hiring.
