Buy a decent, practical ring and save the money. Revisit the idea of an expensive ring 10-15 years down the road if she turns out to be an actual keeper.

Do this. I proposed to my wife right out of grad school. I don’t remember exactly, but I think my wife’s engagement ring was about 7k-ish and another 1.5k or so for the wedding band. Go to a reputable jeweler and look around. If you know what she likes, you won’t have trouble picking out something that she will like.

Synthetic diamond.

Superior to natural.
1/2 or less price.

Stick with a lab grown diamond. It’s half the price and she won’t be able to tell the difference.

A diamond jew wont be able to tell the difference

Lab grown is a real diamond, chemically identical

Yep.
Carbon arranged in a diamond cubic structure.

Natural, or man made.
Makes zero difference.

3 months salary.

Is the stupidest fricking “tradition” I’ve ever heard. If the op is dumb enough to spend $30k on a ring, Jesus.

Spend some time Googling diamonds, and you'll learn all you need to know fairly quickly. There's really not that much to learn.

I second the poster who mentioned a wholesaler. My husband found mine though a distributor and had it very simply set. He knew I wanted something with diamonds around it, so we went to a local jewelry store together to pick out the setting and our wedding rings.

I realize the ring seems sort of superficial, but some of y'all need to understand that to most women, this is the ultimate gesture of love from a man. It's just part of our culture, for better or worse.

Plus, she will have to wear this thing every single day and have every person on earth ask to see it. It's like a brand men put on women, so yeah, they kind of want it to be pretty and go with their general style.

I think they mark the diamonds with a serial number. That’s it. No actual mineral difference.

Someone get me started on buying synthetic diamonds. How do I get the diamond to stick to the ring?

Blue Nile. She won’t know the difference between a $30k ring and a $15k ring. If she does, you have bigger problems on your hands.

I had a buddy living in New York who had a jeweler. My wife sketched up a ring with sapphires and a diamond. He made the ring and shipped it to me. Got a nice quality classic round diamond of 0.98 Ct - who needs bigger - with 3 baguette cut sapphires on each side. It looks great. She gets lots of compliments on the ring and it only cost less than one months salary. Still looks great after 34 years. Relative bargain. Would be the equivalent of about $6500 in today’s dollars.

If it is too perfect they will know it is synthetic.

I read some articles. Then asked for a recommendation. Apparently I had a friend in the industry. I found the perfect Diamond, then designed a ring around it. Roughly $15k all said and done. Insured for close to $30k

Wife loves it and she makes way more than me so it was a good investment. She just cleared a $50k bonus last week. I’m coming out ahead.

The crystalline lattice is different and while you can't tell the difference by the naked eye nor even a diamond grader with a loupe you can with stereoscopic instruments.

Actually, very few diamonds have any identification etched onto the girdle.

I spent what tOT would consider an obscene amount of money on my wife's engagement ring but I had the money and she wanted it. We picked out the stone together and she designed the ring with the jeweler. To this day it is really the only physical possession she really cares about. It makes her happy and that is the only thing I care about. She also spent a similar amount of money on a watch for me as a wedding gift. Different strokes for different folks.

We didn't have the option for a lab-created diamond and I have no idea how she would have felt about it. I can see the appeal of something that took millions of years for the earth to make, but she is at heart a pragmatist.
