Employers that don't check records.

Here's the thing, a relative of mine just got released from prison after serving 25+ years for an armed robbery conviction and he's looking for work. He's in his late 40's, fairly good shape and while in prison he was trained as a auto mechanic. I pretty much know that dealerships will be off limits to him, but maybe local garages might give him a chance.
Any suggestions?

a criminal should fit right in

What location? And what are the terms of his release? I think that would factor into what kind of place would hire him.

LA Council on Aging is where I would start.

I’m pretty sure if he shows up for work on time and has a decent work ethic, even dealerships would hire him. The job applicant pool is very weak these days.

Put him out on the rigs where he will fit right in

The prison doesn't offer any job placement assistance?

It is going to be tough for you to get a job, scumbag.

Companies get tax credits for hiring felons so he will probably get a job.

Plenty of guys working on tugs and other commercial vessels with rap sheets. Mechanic background would be a plus for a deckhand or "engineer" position.

Are you implying that he’s gonna lie to them about his past?

The only job I've worked with an ex-con was a high school job with the state of MS, so I know the state gov'ts will hire them. And there was a mechanic position where I was. Groundskeeping at a state facility and they needed people to maintain and repair the equipment.

Look into state motorpools. Any department that has public vehicles.

Offshore, construction, auto shop.. His options will be limited (at least at first), but if he is willing to work that is a step in the right direction. I wouldn't count out dealerships. 25+ years is a long arse time. I'd tell him to start small and just try to get acclimated to the real world for awhile anyway. One day at a time.

He lives outside of Covington. He's willing to commute in the metro area. He didn't go into terms of release, he told me he can't leave the state.

I would think local garages would definitely be open to hiring him.
thats a helluva long time for an armed robbery

Mechanic jobs are everywhere, if he's interested he should be hired somewhere but he's definitely gonna have to apply everywhere until he finds someone willing to give him a chance.
I don't think most insurances allow felons, especially around automobiles and especially for someone with a theft related conviction.
But yeah tell him to go to all the mom and pops.
