HR here, I’ve worked at quite a few companies in the LA area. It would really surprise you how many companies hire felons, especially big name companies. However, the biggest issue is it’s a crime of trust so that will limit his opportunities. Any mom and pop likely won’t check records; start there.

I would his PO would need to verify his employment. Don't think there is anyway around that.

I hire ex-felons. I'm in the glass fabrication and installation business. The ex-felons work on the fabrication side because I can't send them on our residential jobs, for obvious reasons. Homeowner Holly isn't going to want drug-dealer Dennis in her home, even if he's been on the straight and narrow for a decade now.

Hell, I have a dude that killed another dude. He paid his debt. Now he shows up here every day, on time, and does his job better than anyone else I've had in that position. Plus he knitted me a LSU scarf - a skill he learned in jail.

They have a couple felons on staff.

Nah, he's not going to lie. Believe me, he very much wants to stay out of prison.

The prison doesn't offer any job placement assistance?

That wouldn't exactly be good for repeat business, now would it?

There's no 1/2 way house type situation that can help him?

That's the way I've seen a lot of ex-cons get re-acclimated to society.

First off, good for him to learn a skill and I wish him the best.

He should look into warehouse work and basic manual labor jobs. He’ll be able to work his way up after that.

The employment services agency on Wooddale by Probation and Parole used to have job listings for these guys.

Have him look into the various programs offered by the state. At one time the Workforce Commission and others had relationships with employers willing to hire former prisoners.

What sucks is, whenever something in the shop comes up missing, he’ll be suspect number one who has to prove his innocence.

Offshore,

I'm typically on the engineering side, so I'm sure the background check is a bit more than a roustabout. But I'd be surprised if it was easier to get a job offshore than it would be as a mechanic somewhere. Lots of background requirements for companies I've worked for.

Tow truck/auto salvage/mechanic shop seems like a perfect fit.

Tell him to talk to his parole officer. They have lists of places willing to hire people with a record. He may not get into mechanics right away, but he'll get something putting money into his pocket while he keeps looking for what he wants. It isn't too difficult to get a TWIC card or a job offshore with a record, too.

He will also need to talk to his officer about any work that is out of state (except offshore). They can give him a travel pass for up to thirty days at a time if he is working across the state line. He just needs to sort it out with his officer.

I’ve seen this story a million times

He’s gonna get an honest job, making scraps for a shitty boss

Then someone from his past pops up and offers him the score of a lifetime

He says frick it and joins in

He gets shot in the first round of fire in the robbery attempt as his wife and kid who he promised to get dinner with that day serendipitously walk by in slow motion as a acapello version of a once popular pop song plays in the back ground

First, don't just assume anything. You never know who will be willing to hire him and if he goes in person to apply or talk to someone, you really never know when someone will connect with him and willing to help him out.

Good mechanics are hard to find...

Your relative should also mention to prospective employers that they can get a tax credit if they hire him. It's a win-win, assuming he's a good worker.

Believe it or not the USPS will hire him. No, I'm not joking. In addition, the state has workforce development specialists that will assist him in getting a job.
