On certain mornings, when my Mexicans begin work at 5 AM, especially Sat. or Sun., I find myself having to make them walk a line before beginning to operate any machinery.
I swear sometimes, these frickers come in and would blow a .25 and expect to hop on a $60K piece of machinery likes its nothing.
First job after high school was working as a cart guy at a country club. The older guys working the kid's job would get high as a kite and were selling weed to members. But if you had any alcohol smell on you, you couldn't work. If you didn't smell, but were acting like an idiot, they had breathalyzers.
My last day there, I showed up utterly shite bombed from the night before a 6 am. I was told I was in no condition to greet members or drive a cart, blew a .17, and quit on the spot.
But I then proceeded to buy a membership, a cart plan, and played 18 holes with the cfo of the company who owns the club and we got shite hammered on tullamore dew.
Tl;dr... I'd be more worried about an employee being high during a shift than drunk before a shift.

So if I smoke a joint on a Friday night and I don't have to be at work until Monday morning, I deserve to be fired? How am I endangering anyone?
You aren't endangering anyone. But what happens when you get arrested for possession of drugs? Your company probably has to fire you, and that costs them an employee and the money to find a new one

Short of someone calling in and telling the police that they're sitting on a mountain of pot, no cop gives a shite about people who smoke at home. I've got plenty of friends who are cops and the paperwork isn't worth it over something so minor.

Do most companies fire someone for misdemeanor possession or marijuana? What bout DUI?

Yeah, what these dopeheads don't understand is, they are all for personal freedom for themselves, but want the government to stop employers from having the personal freedom to deny employment to dopers.
Makes perfect sense in the millennial mind, I guess...

That is on the sales side of the business.

Who wouldn't? I would be worried/non-tolerant of any employee under the influence of any substance that he/she doesn't have a prescription for. What does drug testing have to do with that though? I cant fathom how some people just think that they are mutually exclusive. You either hire moral people that care or you don't. Why do people think the drug testing would prevent someone from showing on any job wasted. Either they are the type of person that will do that or they aren't. My job drug tests which means I cant smoke weed, and because I need to support myself I don't smoke weed because I don't want to lose my job. If they would drop the drug testing policy, I would then begin to smoke weed. That doesn't mean that I would show up to work high out of my mind, the same way I wouldn't show up to work wasted. Why is that? Because im a responsible person that cares about doing a good job and I don't want to endanger anyone or embarrass myself or my family! Is this really that hard? The drug test doesn't deter me from showing up high/drunk. Being a good fricking person deters me.

Probably the kind where being fricked up can be a safety concern.
That wasn't my point.
My point...was that 80% is high for the lowest of professions.

I would bet that 99 % of the failed tests were for pot. Should be ignored unless company is overrun with stupidity. You may as well deny employment or fire someone for drinking scotch after work.

This is a real problem in the construction industry. There is such a huge demand for tradesmen, and there are not enough who can be relied on to show up to work every day, perform quality work, and not fail a drug test.
Yes. There are some projects around here that have consistent work, even when the economy is bad, such as nuke plants and refineries. I have heard several stories about trying to send guys to these places, but they can't take the work because of the tests.

What's your scotch of choice? This is exactly why I am working on creating passive income that doesn't require me working for someone else. Well that and I don't want to work for someone else.

Hard to go wrong with a bottle of Cutty or J&B.

You are a miserable sounding person. Maybe take a Xanax. Don't worry, Xanax is legal so it must be safe and won't destroy your precious paper shuffling company.
Otherwise, if you insist on dictating what harmless activities people do in their private lives on their own time, maybe offer more money?

Not when 65 yr old Jorge decides to mow a serpentine pattern his first pass down the middle of the fairway, having run over the 150 yd pole maker and put it park in front of the green, call it good and pass out at 525 AM.
Was pretty funny to see though.

So, you are fine with someone speeding? How about keeping undersized redfish? Or not declaring all of their income?
Just curious.

Nope. Employers are lawsuit targets if an employee fricks someone up while high on the job. Testing will continue.
Fine, but OP works at a mortgage place. It's sitting at a desk playing with paper. It's about as tard as Walmart drug testing it's cashiers.

Then why do these companies do random testing for office jobs?
The result is the same for the company.

It is still against the employee handbook and will test if there is "reasonable suspension". We have an office in Colorado and the memo going out said "Although recreational marijuana is legal in the state of Colorado it is still against company policy."
The manager of my previous company in CO did the same thing. That manager was forced into retirement.
