My detective buddies say it was not a complicated as previously hypothesized.
Earlier stories were circulating it was possibly a granuler convection debate, as it turns out the scholars were not at loggerheads as to their theory but alas the classic "tabs vs. spaces" disagreement necessitated the dumping of several magazines worth of 7.62 x 39 from a Draco pistol.
