Any word on Central Community Schools?

Does anyone really "work" in the EBR school system?
quote:good for them, if they don’t close im sure a student will call in a bomb threat to Dutchtown
Ascension is possibly waiting until Sunday

today is Friday - you mean wait until Sunday when no one is at work at EBR schools?
You are goddamn right. Doesn’t stop my office from having a daily update call through the weekend to see what Monday holds.

Yes, I think the schools should be open. I also think, given current forecasts, that this system will spare the BR metro the worst of the effects. I also believe the schools are far too quick to pull the trigger on closures. As for the extra day off, I think its a disservice to the students. They were closed Monday for MLK day. They will be closed in a couple of weeks for Carnival season. Do they ever have to go to class for a complete month? With no random days off midweek? You know, like they may be expected to do if they are employed as adults?
I actually don't disagree with any of this, and yes have become weak and gutless as a society, I'm just saying the people making the decision that involves the least risk and headache involved.

There will probably be ice on the road.

True, but we are being told to give out packets in case of outages.

Here's something a lot of people don't fully recognize. When we were younger, you started school the week before Labor Day and you were finished with exams the second week of May. Now, school starts the first week of August and kids are taking exams sometimes as late as the week of Memorial Day. The number of days of school is still the same at 170-180, but it's been spread out to allow for more days off when there is an emergency. I remember when you still wen to school the week of Thanksgiving and were back in school the day after Mardi Gras. You would have those kids at home regardless, it's just that they end up home with you more during the school now than during the summer.

Sparing the worse effects doesn't mean things won't be hazardous out three.
yeah, thats pretty much exactly what that means. And there are always hazards out there. Thats all part of educating the children. Teaching them to get up and go, even when it's cold and scary outside.
Ridiculous. Power outages all over town at major intersections for school buses and drop off and pick up parents and teachers and janitors is no big deal?
I agree school is called out far too often lately for "major" thunderstorms especially. But city wide power outages caused by an ice storm is a rare event around here and different altogether

Considering we used zero hurricane days this year, I'm not getting particularly bent out of shape about keeping people off the roads after it rains for two days straight and then hard freezes.

Excpet none of that is likly to happen. Go look at the WAFB weather website. None of that is even likely in the BR metro:
I

ce Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain to the north and west, where there are better odds of significant ice impacts
Its going to be very cold. But they have backed way off of the icy armageddon they've been discussing for our area. Thus the "extreme cold" warnings from tNWS. But there aren't large power outages or impassable roads forecast for our area.
And are you doing your child a favor when you indoctrinate them into believing that they need to hide form the cold weather? Are you really preparing them for life when you condition them to "just stay home" when conditions "feel" unsafe or uncomfortable? I don't even give a shite about the curriculum at this point. I think we are doing a grave disservice to everyone when we take the attitude of "run and hide" or "stay inside" every time we face adversity- be it Covid or the weather. And it sure seems like our school systems do that at every opportunity.

That seem to be the consensus. I guess the argument is that you can't just wait until the day of to shut it down, like we used to for decades. Even though we have much more technology and instant forms of mass communication.

Baker schools are closed on Monday

OMG there is a cloud in the sky, close the schools!!

ironic name, as this is what the busses will be doing at 5am on the frozen roads...

Interstate and bridges will probably ice over, even if surface streets don't.
Guess how many busses have to use the interstate to transport the kids to school.
It's one day. You'll be fine if the kids are at home

So now we're supposed to risk hazardous conditions on a local hack's forecast 2 1/2 days out right?
You are world class

I agree with all of this. However, the reality is we live in an incredibly litigious state. If little Johnny slips because there is ice the school gets sued. A bus slides on the ice and crashes the school gets sued. A parent crashes on their way to/from school the school gets sued because why not
So they have to close because attorneys work overtime to sue anyone for personal injury and neglect despite the fact that the schools should be open
ETA The real question isn't whether schools should be open, but rather, what are the chances of a major lawsuit versus missing a day of school?

I'm assuming you think the kids should go to school Monday? What's the worst that happens? The kids get a day off of school? I can think of much worst possibilities if they don't close schools.
You, sir or mam, are part of the problem. It will be a sunshiny day. Yeah, a bit chilly but no reason NOT to go to school.
