EBR Metro Council votes to override mayor's controversial veto of an economic development for North BR.

quote:

"There's a lot of areas in that North Baton Rouge corridor that are very blighted, that there's not a lot of development in," said Councilman John
Delgado who authored the ordinance. "Really the goal is to bring economic opportunities to North Baton Rouge. For many, many years, it's just been forgotten."

The mayor’s decision garnered quite a bit of controversy last week after he used his first veto since he has been in office to halt the plan. He said the proposal had good intentions but needs to be adjusted before he can support it.

"It says you can have a piece of property. You can go and build on that property if you're in certain areas and you can then virtually lease that property out to somebody else and not pay any taxes whatsoever so therefore it's not fair," Holden said.

The council needed a two-thirds vote at Wednesday night’s meeting in order to bypass the mayor’s action.

Just talked to @MayorKipHolden- he's mad. Says when negative effects happen, "I'll be sitting on the sidelines saying, I told you so."

That's exactly what I want to do. Bring business to a crime ridden shithole.

Delgado's probably planning on opening another bar down there.

Instead let it continue to be a forgotten shithole that brings in no revenue anyway.

Holden's not the brightest, but he does care about Baton Rouge. And that is much more than can be said about the scumbags on the metro council.

And all to no avail. Sharon Weston Broome's gonna be the next mayor. Da irony.

This has everything to do with the property where the old EKL was situated. There have been a few nibbles by developers to turn it into all kinds of different things from movie theatres to mixed use with retail to office parks. However, because it is in an area where the local populace doesn't exactly have a ton of disposable income and potential tenets are really skittish about that violent and property crime rate, there is no way to make the investment make sense without some kind of tax incentive. However, this plan goes far beyond that, giving tax incentives to a much wider area. With the city/parish having already exempted so many areas from those taxes already, there starts to be an issue regarding what areas are still able to pay the taxes to support the city/parish government (this is the same issue Gonzales has been facing the last few years).

Kip knows that giving this broad tax incentive could jeopardize the city's finances in the near future with an economic downturn. Delgado is merely grandstanding because he's running for mayor. Politicians gonna politic.

I am unfamiliar with him. Is it pronounced Dell-gah-doe or does he go with the New Orleans pronunciation of Delguh-Doo?

Why does his wife not share his last name? How is her last name pronounced?

I would take Delgado over broome. Atleast Delgado will do something for all of EBR and not just for north Baton Rouge.

Heard a credible rumor that Denise Marcelle may run.

That would at least split the NBR vote Broome is counting on.

Delgado can go frick himself. Good luck winning Mayor-President in EBR as a Republican without the St George vote.

The only thing that would happen if this were to pass would be developers building more Sec. 8 housing. It'd make NBR even shittier.

All of the choices suck. Smokey is a corrupt a-hole who was on the metro council for years and now is on the alcohol permit board. He's one of the primary reasons why the interstate has yet to be widened between downtown and acadian because any expansion would go right through his bar.

Denise Marcelle is a grandstanding POS who stands up for every drug dealer, murderer, thief, and rapist in this town at every opportunity. As a white person in her district, she makes it very clear that she doesn't give one f$&k about what I or any other cracker thinks.

Sharon Weston Broome is basically the same, but a little smarter than Denise.

Delgado is the a-hole who took over Smokey's council seat and somehow managed to be an even bigger a-hole than smokey was. He owns at least a partial stake in most of the downtown bars and was the sleezeball who screwed up Mud and Water.

All of the choices are horrendous. It almost makes me want to run for mayor just so there'd be one sane person in the race.

You know it's a terrible field when BR would be better off giving Kip another term.
