You're fighting a losing battle, these people think they own the road and that everyone needs to get the hell out of their way.

I see it every single day.

I don't know if they own the road or not but between a car and a bicycle the bicycle loses everytime. With today's distracted driver you're taking your life in your hands everytime you get on the road.

More than likely distracted driving...probably texting or at least looking down at his phone.

Probably didn't see them till he hit them.

Very sad.

It seems like a dumb thing to me to take a principled stand on. You're putting your life on the line to ride a bike. Is it really that important?

In being honest, they drive me nuts. I'm sure 90% of them are fine, but when you come across a group that won't get the hell out of the way, it drives you nuts. When I rode bikes as a kid, you knew to get the hell out of the way when a car is coming. No idea where this idea took hold of sharing the road. It sounds good in theory, but doesn't work in reality.

Shame someone lost their life over this.

Getting in your car and driving to work is dangerous. Playing football is dangerous. Going hunting is dangerous. The list goes on.

The fact is that people who want/like to bike long distances have very few options around BR. The roads in St Francisville and plaquemine are the safest available for bicyclists going 15-25 mph.

My wife does triathlons and has to train somewhere. We have an indoor option but you can’t simulate heat and hills and the road itself. The people blaming the cyclists are fricking morons.

Definitely literally, but almost certainly poetically.

I knew Buddy really well through business. We lost a really good man. What a terrible thing to happen. I can’t believe it.

Lots of stupidity in this thread. I have driven this road a lot and can tell you it is not a safe place to bike at all. I am sorry someone lost their life but unless the kid was drunk he isn't doing time. There are about two places on the whole route I feel confident passing a car and I still won't do it most of the time. This just isn't a bike route at all. Prayers for the councilman's family.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he hit them on purpose. Most people would break after hitting one biker, he bulldozed through two in a row
He didn't flee the scene, evidenced by the photos on various media sites. If he did it on purpose, why would he be stupid enough to stop?

If for some reason golf courses merge with 2-10 ton machines traveling at high speeds with unimaginable scenarios interacting with other machines and scenarios of the like, I will walk away from the hobby immediately, even if by law we “share the course.”

Unfortunately true.

frick you, man. It’s not the cyclist’s fault for getting run over here. Just like it’s not a motorist’s fault when they’re sitting in stopped traffic before the I10 bridge and an 18 wheeler comes barreling in. It’s 100% on the person not paying attention or speeding and so on. This isn’t a “well he shouldn’t have been there” situation.

There is a dangerously high level of stupidity and arrogance with cyclists, but that doesn’t appear to have anything to do with this accident.

A motorist wasn’t paying attention an barreled into the cyclist.

There are a lot of people on this thread who have never driven this road . Maybe you have driven it one or two times. You don't know it , as I said earlier this sucks someone lost their life. That being said I would never ride a bike on this road without the police shutting it down from vechilar traffic. Way to many blind spots. This kid is going to get off if he has a half way decent attorney
