East Baton Rouge library board member questions $94,900 for interactive globe

Lol. Government spends taxpayer money so freely and frivolously.
quote:
Chance Wilson, who was appointed to the board in May, is calling out library officials for earmarking $94,900 for an digital interactive education tool, called an OmniGlobe, for the downtown River Center Branch Library and another $35,000 for office furniture for the library system's deputy director.
quote:
"The administration has been telling the board 'we want this much money' and the board just rubber stamps it," Wilson said. "This shows how ineffective the library board is. There is no supervision or scrutiny." Both Library Director Spencer Watts and Jason Jacob, president of the library board, denied Wilson's accusation.
quote:
Wilson is pushing back on spending more than $90,000 on an amenity for the downtown library, arguing the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum down the street already has an OmniGlobe. The construction on the downtown branch is already well over $19 million due to a mishap that halted construction for nearly a year and has resulted in litigation that is expected to drag on for years.
quote:
"We have a more diverse population we service," Watts said. "This project would be very attractive to middle and high school-aged students. A lot of those students may come to the library 10 to 15 times a year where they might go to the science museum only a few times a year." Jacob points out that the money set aside for the OmniGlobe hasn't been spent and that the library system is looking at cheaper alternatives around the $50,000 range.

Chance Wilson, going a great job.

It's pretty incredible what monetary expenditures you can justify when it isn't your money and you don't need to run a profit.

Coincidence? There are no coincidences

People need to be asking about the $35k in office furniture. Motherfrickers need to be fired if that is true.

Exactly how many children go to the downtown branch of the library anyway?
Most huge events are at the main branch on Goodwood and there are other branches as far out as Central, Zachary, and Baker to one that is actually a few streets over from the proposed white elephant.
This whole thing has been a clusterfrick combining the library system having too much money due to a dedicated tax and a bunch of politicians looking to spend money like water for various reasons.
And if you really want to look back into the history of things, the library tax is a big reason why no one trusts the city-parish government.
That tax passed because the city claimed that the libraries would close without it and that it would just be to guarantee their funding, not raise taxes overall.
The second that tax got passed and the library got dedicated funding, the city took the money originally earmarked for the library and started spending it on pet projects not approved by the voters.
People got PISSED to say the least.

Since it isn't really their money, the government spends it like it's a bottomless bank account.

Like fricking Google Maps? There is no reason to spend any amount on an interactive globe.

And let’s be honest. Google maps on your phone is far more accurate. With earth being flat and all.

what happens with the 44k they save...if they get it for 50k

When Wilson asked board members to justify the expenditure for the OmniGlobe, which he said happened before he joined the board, he was told the museum has an entry fee for visitors whereas the library wouldn't so more people would get to learn from and use the technology.
I really hope this wasn't their rationale. There's a reason some things require an admission fee.

I know a lot of successful small business owners that are taxed to death in this state. I don’t know anyone that would spend anywhere close to $35,000 on furniture for a single office.

I'm not saying it's right, but have you ever seen the prices for an office chair that's built to last? You're talking at least $700.
Check out the Hon website, which is the company the state and probably most local governments get from Louisiana Office Supply...on a contract price that's about half of the list price.

Custom office furniture is absurdly expensive

Library Tax is insane. Though I would add BREC, CATS and COA as the Four Horsemen of Baton Rouge waste. All the while drainage and streets completely suck.
