This is a common scam. It happened to me in high school and I refused to argue with the guy and had a manager count the register. I got in “trouble” for it because the dumb arse manager didn’t understand what he was tying to do

Usually they confuse the cashier, and get more cash than they paid back. When I worked at Canes it was decently common, and we would tell our people once they try to pay with a hundred and take it back, close the register and get a manager as it's likely a scam.

Say the bill is for 20, well you pay a hundred so you get 80 back, but oh I found a 20 so here is sixty of the of the 80 back and we are square, thanks!

They literally just keep going until they feel the individual is lost and then will usually have an exit strategy of "kids in the car I gotta go" type thing.

Using a $100 bill on a $2 purchase? Yeah that’s not shady at all

Short change artists and are extremely common. Happened to me once when I was a teenage cashier at Kmart. Didn't get in trouble, but the manager had to explain to me how it happened.

Saw it go down when I was older and working a football game. A lady was taking up money and a guy tried to short change her. This time he wasn't given his version of the change back and, as you might expect, pitched a fit. The principal wound up just letting the guy have his money to prevent a scene. That's what they rely on. Either way they win.

Fair enough. You were there, not us, so only you can accurately interpret the situation. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. But this is the OT, where we are all 6’ 3” 225 with 6% body fat, 4.3 forty-running, 400 pound benching, former Golden Glove champions with 8 inch cocks—you should have known that posting this story would illicit such responses.

I worked at a grocery store in high school, sometimes they would make us run a register. I had someone try this scam on me, I was smart enough to just close the register and let the manager count it down. The manager got MAD at me for saving the store $100 and aggravating a "paying" customer. frick that noise.

Wal-Mart has the ability to quickly see if the customer is lying.

I was at the self-checkout once and got "cash back". The machine shorted me $20. I told the worker that and they grabbed the manager who called security on the walkie talky and explained the request, except she didn't give details. Only that I said I was short. It took maybe 60 seconds and then the person on the other end of the walkie talkie said I was shorted $20.

I'm in tech and honestly I was really impressed.

I am curious if they have cameras on the checkout lanes to verify incidents like this.

I actually do understand this mentality.

People are crazy and this is fair.

Based on what happened at the self-checkout, I am under the impression that they have at least one camera at every register. I suspect they don't have GOOD cameras at every register though and that's why you'll see them at registers with broken card scanners and whatnot even when there's a bunch of other empty registers.

eta: at least I hope they have a good reason to use broken registers.

You did good with your son there. If your son had not been there the issue needed to be raised at the beginning. "Yes, she did give you the 100 dollars back." Since there was a potential for confrontation, being on the safe side with your son present was the wise decision.

All of the he said/ she said doesn't matter. There is a camera for each register. You should have shot him for being so stupid.

At my previous job a Spanish speaking third party client had bought a polo shirt with our logo on it. Hours later he returned and said he wanted to get another polo because his earlier one didn’t fit. Told him to give me his previous run and the receptionist will swap it out. He then claimed “No No I already give to her exchange earlier but said I be back later.”

Of course the receptionist said that was a damn lie and he never gave back the original shirt. Thinking it may be a translation issue I used an app to communicate the situation back and forth. Of course, he was still acting all confused and then said our receptionist was lying. I stood my ground and eventually his hosting client came down and paid for the other shirt.
Can’t stand scammers. Especially the “me no speak English” liars. Gringo not playing around.

Change scammers are common.

Happened to me when I was 17. It sucked. Luckily, I kept my job.

There was a line of people at the register. I was new and stressed and people in line were giving me the "hurry the frick up" face.
