Here's your solution --

Let your wife go to Vegas by herself.

You stay at home with kids.

Hire HOT 18 year old babysitter with a morally casual attitude.

Screw the babysitter and get laid for the first time in 2.5 years.

Everyone WINS!

Just fly Spirit direct out of New Orleans, suck it up and pay for a checked bag or two, and fly non-stop.

They'll let you bring a diaper bag, car seat, stroller, and other required child accessories for no extra cost.

My kid is under 2 and has flown to and from Vegas a few times now, my MIL was living out there prior to her passing.

ETA: He also did a 2-week road trip over the summer with no real issues... he's a good traveller.

You must have been looking at some kind of special date? Vegas is one of the cheaper places to fly to from MSY.

Use Google Flights + the Hopper app to figure out best prices and best time to book.

If you build scheduled stops at some cool national parks then by all means drive, otherwise do anything to avoid driving I10 through Texas, HOLY shite it’s exhausting.

If you make it, do anything you can to stop at either Bryce Canyon or Zion. (Both are very close to Vegas but are two of the most beautiful places in the world.

The drive to Vegas is pretty cool. The part between Phoenix and Vegas is incredible.

West Texas.... not so much.

Flights are damn expensive, especially since I have to buy 3 tickets.

And you think driving (with a baby and a toddler no less) is gonna save you a ton of money? Gotta factor in gas and hotel stops (each way) as well.

The time (and sanity) saved by flying is worth more than any little bit you save (which won't be as much as you think) in driving.

Go to USPS the day before your flight and ship the kids express mail to Grandma's house. Then you can fly in peace and quiet and the kids will be here when you arrive.

I've driven that trip twice.

I would suggest spending the money and flying. Once you figure in time, hotel costs, and food on the trip and return trip....flying isn't that bad of a cost.

about a 25 hr drive not including stops.
Why is this even a question? I wouldn't want to drive 5 hours with an infant and a toddler, much less 25.

1700-ish mile drive. You're looking at $200+ on fuel plus a night in a hotel each way. Round trip, you're probably going to spend around $700 driving, not including meals.

If you book far enough in advance, you can fly Spirit for cheaper than driving. Or if you want less chance of your flight getting cancelled or some other unexpected disruption, Southwest can be had for under $300/person round trip.

That’s a long arse drive. Fly without a doubt. If your dates are flexible you should be able to Find cheap flights. If you have time to drive, you can leave midweek SW flights are about $300/person RT Vegas flights have gotten expensive.

If you have Chase sapphire you can transfer points to SW and would cost about half that.

I’d put the wife and kids on the plane, and then hit the open road solo. You can’t put a price on that sort of peace and quiet. Just you cruising down the road with no kids, no wife... just silence.
