Take the Amtrak out of New Orleans.

If no kids, it is a fun drive with lots of cool side stops. With kids, hell to the no.

I’d put the wife and kids on the plane, and then hit the open road solo. You can’t put a price on that sort of peace and quiet. Just you cruising down the road with no kids, no wife... just silence.
This is terrible advice
Which of his problems does this solve other than not having to deal with his kids?

Just mail them, they'll be fine

Fly. The wife and I drove a couple years ago, and although it wasn't bad, the children change that quick. Rip off the bandaid with a couple of quick flights and get it over with.

Fly.
Everyone on the plane will hate your guts, but you will never see them again.

The parents will feel sorry for you, parents with crying kids on a plane created the most anxious and embarrassed feeling, a lot of us have been there.
Again it’s Vegas, fly during the week, during the day on SW and it won’t be a full flight

Send wife and kids on plane. Tell her you have to work that day and fly out a day or two later. Fly back early. Miss flying with kids. Profit.
Ha. I did this about 5 years ago. Wife planned a trip to Nashville with the kids. The week before a trip "came up" and I needed to go to Houston for a day at the beginning of the Nashville trip (I could have easily gone at any point the following two weeks...shh). Went from IAH to BNA, met the family, hung out a few days and we all flew back the same day but I was on a different airline because that's the only way work would still pay for that leg of my trip (not even remotely true).

A couple of things... If you're going to Vegas is easier/cheaper to shuttle/Uber than drive your own vehicle around there. If you're going to be on the strip the ratio of billboard vehicles for hookers is ~1:10.
Second, we're trying to decide whether to fly or drive from the midwest to Utah this summer. I love flying and it's a 20+ hour drive but it would cross off a shitload of states that I've never visited. I usually make my wife drive through the boring stretches and I do the urban driving so my boredom isn't much of a consideration. (It's been 22 years but I used to drive the northern WI-Starkville trip all in one day.) It would be an easy decision if it put us around Omaha mid-June rather than around the 4th of July. Oh and FML...she came home last night and suggested we tell her parents to fly to meet us in SLC.
ETA: My kids will be 13 & 15...likely the last chance we'll have to take a roadtrip with them.

Driving that far with kids will make you beyond miserable

You should definitely fly. You can usually find cheap flights to Vegas. No way in hell would I drive.

Absolutely fly.
Now, if you have days to kill and you don't have rambunctious kids, it can be a fun drive...especially if you're a Route 66 road warrior like myself. That said, this time of year, getting through parts of the Texas panhandle, New Mexico and especially Flagstaff, Arizona can be challenging weather - wise.

Buy one ticket for the grandmother and fly her to you.

A real doctor wouldn’t have to worry about buying 3 flights....

Fly man. Driving is long and miserable and most of it is West Texas rumble week and not scenic.

Fly
No way I want to ride in a car to Vegas with a 2.5 year old and a 6m old

If you have time, drive. Take the old roads, see the countries beauty.
