it's a numbers game. population in catholic schools is way down since katrina/cheaper and better options in public schools. it's the same in a lot of the boys catholic schools as well

95% of Mt. Carmel girls and women I have come across the past 25 years are smart, down to earth, and feminine. Great marriage material.
I did not know about the situation with Dominican.
Jesuit emailed me a survey about 7 or 8 years ago concerning the master plan of the school. I told them to seriously consider building another campus on the Northshore. There are so many alums living over here, and in my convos with them they overwhelmingly said they will not be sending their kids to Jesuit because of the crime. Some of them don’t want to commute.
Over time the private schools are going to consolidate as there will be a few that fold.

have zero idea why you would send your girls to Dominican unless you can’t afford other options.
Meh. It’s a solid school. Or at least it has been.

Jesuit almost bought Shaw after Katrina and would have had a campus there. Not implausible for them to make a second campus. Wonder how that would work for sports though.

I’ve never heard of 8th graders going to HS that seems like a terrible idea to me. I went to a Catholic HS my freshmen year fwiw. It’s much more popular to have 9th grade separate from the senior high and have 10-12 graders together.
The car rider line incidents if true would be a MAJOR issue, I know my wife wouldn’t deal with that especially given the options.

For the longest time my mind was blown that holy cross was where it was for so long and still attracted pretty wealthy and preppy students.

Supposedly they have 8th grades to get around a certain LHSAA rule requiring out of zone kids to sit out their first year of HS

That’s a shame. My daughter was well prepared for LSU, Dominican was a great school.

Hard to believe with all the other catholic schools in New Orleans doing so well /s
Fewer and fewer parents care if their kids get a catholic education, they send them to one of the many other private schools. Every couple years the diocese has been closing schools in the metro area.

It has gained an ultra-woke reputation in the last 3-4 years. People talk; Chapelle’s incoming class is the highest in almost 20 years.

Unless something has changed (which it may have according to another post, DHS beat out the other Catholic schools when my daughter was there. I told her Chapelle was a no, and she could pick another. MCA was on par with DHS, but not quite its level, although there were some things I liked. But the “rah rah” atmosphere and cheerleading at MCA open house turned my daughter to DHS, as well for its academic edge. A shame what’s happening to it, if true.

Isn't Dominican on St Charles near Broadway?

St Paul’s would expand before a Northshore Jesuit is approved.

I don’t think it’s a “bad” school by any means. But there are a few better options in the city.

All I remember about that area was when my job sent me to deliver in the New Orleans East area right after the covid lockdowns, I saw a homeless dude eating another homeless dude booty out in broad daylight on the corner and I wanted to go back home after that.

there's also controversy over Supreme Court justice Amy Coney Barrett, who went there, with debate over how the school should be honoring her.
